This and the first book, "A Princess of Mars" are two of my favorite books ever. It is very much the protypical sequel, having everything turned against the hero, having him fight his way across a planet to get his wife back, all the stakes are raised, and stuff is bigger! John Carter gets sucked back to Mars, but instead of being someplace he's been before, he's in the Valley Dor, "heaven" in the Martian religion, where the albino Therns control the planet for their own selfish whims, never suspecting that they themselves are manipulated by the dusky First Born and their goddess Isis I can't go on enough about the edge-of-your-seat metal fun the book is It was written in 1912 and it rules!

That maze is solvable! Just start with the purply "goddess" there and follow it to blue-shadowed John Carter hanging out with Xodor in the bottom corner
