Description

La ville de Bienne (Biel en allemand) se trouve à l’extrémité orientale du Lac de Bienne. C’est une ville du canton de Berne officiellement bilingue (français allemand) avec 43,1 % de ses habitants étant de langue maternelle française et 56,9 % de langue allemande.
La création de la ville eut lieu autour de 1220-1230 par le prince-évêque de Bâle dont le territoire s’étendait jusqu’au lac de Bienne. En 1234, la mention Burgum de Biello apparait sur un document officiel citant la ville comme un bailliage. Même si ce n’est qu’en 1275, lorsque Rodolphe 1er de Habsbourg lui donne sa charte de franchise royale, que Bienne est considérée réellement comme une ville.

Bienne conclut des alliances en 1279 avec Berne, en 1311 avec Fribourg, en 1334 avec Soleure, Morat en 1342 et la Neuveville en 1395.

Les Biennois participèrent à plusieurs campagnes militaires des Confédérés, et s’allièrent à la confédération en 1478, Ils participèrent même aux assemblées (appelées Diètes fédérales) dès 1500 mais seulement avec une voix consultative.

En 1528 avec d’autres communes, Bienne adopta la réforme protestante, avant cette date au niveau religieux la ville était soumise à l’archevêque de Lausanne. Plus trad en 1564 une terrible épidémie de peste emporta environ 640 habitants sur 1200

Entre 1589 et 1595, 18 personnes sont brûlées vifs pour sorcellerie.

Le 6 février 1798, les troupes Françaises occupent la ville qui ne résiste pas à l’envahisseur, Bienne devint temporairement le chef-lieu du Canton de Bienne comprenant 18 communes, ce canton est ensuite rattaché la même année au département du Mont-Terrible puis en 1800 au département du Haut-Rhin, de 1798 à 1813 les habitants doivent payer de lourds impôts, le maire de la ville est nommé par les Français et la contrebande se développe.

Vers 1813-1814, les Français perdent la bataille de Leipzig, les troupes Autrichiennes et Russes entre à Bienne et une épidémie de typhus tue en trois mois 123 habitants et 200 soldats étrangers.

En 1815 au Congrès de Vienne, un ambassadeur des Biennois tente d’obtenir la création d’un canton souverain de Bienne avec Bienne pour chef-lieu, mais ceci est refusé et Bienne et le district de Nidau sont offerts au canton de Berne, ce n’est qu’en 1832 que Bienne se sépara de Nidau en devenant le chef-lieu de son propre district.

The people of Biel took part in several military campaigns of the Confederates, and allied themselves to the confederation in 1478. They even took part in the assemblies (called Federal Diets) from 1500 but only with an advisory vote.

In 1528 with other municipalities, Biel adopted the Protestant reform, before this date at the religious level the city was subject to the Archbishop of Lausanne. Later in 1564 a terrible epidemic of plague took away about 640 inhabitants out of 1200

Between 1589 and 1595, 18 people were burned alive for witchcraft.

On February 6, 1798, the French troops occupied the city which didn't resist the invader, Biel temporarily became the capital of the Canton of Biel comprising 18 municipalities, this canton was then attached the same year to the department of Mont-Terrible then in 1800 in the department of Haut-Rhin, from 1798 to 1813 the inhabitants had to pay heavy taxes, the mayor of the city was appointed by the French and smuggling developed.

Around 1813-1814, the French lost the Battle of Leipzig, Austrian and Russian troops entered Biel and a typhus epidemic killed 123 inhabitants and 200 foreign soldiers in three months.

In 1815 at the Congress of Vienna, an ambassador from Biel tried to obtain the creation of a sovereign canton of Biel with Biel as its capital, but this was refused and Biel and the district of Nidau were offered to the canton of Bern, which It was not until 1832 that Biel separated from Nidau, becoming the capital of its own district.
