Description In the Rauris Valley in Salzburg, Austria there is an ancient tradition held every January 5th: Schnabelpercthen. A tradition in which people dress up as a manifestation of the pagan goddess Perchta and go about the streets visiting homes and businesses pretending to sweep and clean and cut people’s stomachs with wooden scissors. “Schnabel” is a German word meaning beak, and "Perchten" is the plural form of Perchta, and "Schnabelperchten" means “Beaked Perchtas”.
In folklore, Perchta upholds cultural taboos and rewards those who abide by tradition, and slits open the stomachs of those who misbehaved.
