Description ...long story behind the ground color and shape; the title makes me think of Demuth so I may change it when I feel I care about titles...anyway, recent, same old story; approximately 4"x 3.5", pastel, conte, pencil...a slightly different treatment of the technique with more pastel overlay, hence the extra grittiness...

I really enjoyed the figures that you drew in this fashion; the way they are isolated into a small circle of color really increases the importance of the shapes. I had not seen figure drawings executed in this matter before, but I think I really prefer this to the huge figure whose limbs and head are just vague references.

In short...great job! XD

Are you working from life? Or a photo?

I love how this one is like you are looking at the figure through an amber ball of glass (an influence of your trip to Venice this summer?) and how the scapula in the foreground is slightly distorted as though viewed through glass. Nice detail work on the rib musculature.

I really am enjoying this series of yours.

...the last two are unfortunately based from a book I have; I think I may just continued for a little while with that one pose just to develop an alternate technique. They are based off of scraps from the mosaic factory, in particular, those of the gold foiled mosaics, which were often these distorted forms with golds interspersed (the regular ones normally look like glass plates, five inches across, with the gold foil as a square in the center, about two inches across, layered in glass---some glasses were this amber color, kind of gold, in part I'm assuming from the recycling of the rejected, deformed plates into newer batches)...thank you very much for your kind words

Do not be distraught by having to resort to books. Unless you have friends or partners or paid models willing to pose for you, they have to do for us figure drawing artistes!

Am glad you find them kind. But they are critique, just not critical. This is a very fine line for many to discern.

As you move forward in this world, you will actually begin to notice who are the studio artists (or have taken a GOOD studio art class) based on how they respond to criticism. If they act like every word is a personal attack, then they are not. If they actually can see the merits in your observation then they are artistes!!!

I am inwardly happy with myself to have remembered your photograph of the glass fragments, recognized the elements, and seen the subtle influence your time in Venice has already had on your art. Means I am not losing my touch... Yea for me!!! XD

...I like to test my own eye as well, especially running through deviantART. If I get to know people and find that I can go on with a rant, I may indulge myself with my opinions in detail. However, seeing things in person is a whole other story, for I recall going back to art school, and having a more difficult time in deciphering my opinions since there are a lot more things at play, marks made that wouldn't need to be considered online most of the time, or couldn't at least. I saw that you mentioned Venice, and was a bit thrilled with that, for it is always a nice feeling to see your own work mature in front of you with valid influences and goals, and have that verified by the opinions and notices of others. The problem some of the time with critique is that, and I know some people with similar perspectives, that when you've come to a point where you have some personal motives, be them the pursuit of line, of form, of color, and you are the only one to understand such, sometimes critiques may be shallow interpretations of the ultimate goal; when you don't get a chance to explain yourself, and your work is put on the chopping block with no information regarding these motives and the history leading up to such, or none which the critics have taken into consideration, it is rather daunting and frustrating...being defensive may be confused with an attempt at elucidating your process and principles...

I hear ya. But isn't it nice when someone gets you, though? Without all the explanation!

Granted they may not see the WHOLE angst of the creative birthing process from your head, but they do GET it and appreciate it.

Can be a very nice thing.

I think that you must work that anatomy figure in greater size. You can do it.

...I have done it larger before...I'm no longer working on anatomy as much as its distortion, and building technique. I don't find that scale dictates quality, and I can and do put a tremendous amount of effort into these smaller constructions...thank you though for the encouragemen; I will return one day to a larger scale...
