Description An elk skull I cleaned and painted. She's very near and dear to me these days. No one ever sees the negative hoof-print on her forehead...its actual size.
PLEASE LOOK, don't take this image is not stock, you don't have permision to reference or retouch it.

*EDIT:* it has come to my clear attention that this is NOT an elk. I am a little disappointed, yes, but relieved too. I always assumed that the skull I found in the wild was poached and dumped because of the curious location that I found it in. However, it is apparently bovine. After the confirmation from three separate hunters that this was indeed elk, stronger evidence proves otherwise. At least I can rest assured that she is legal to own, now.Β

I was gonna ask if you were sure it wasn't a cow skull... Looked too much like one to me to be an elk!

But I love what you did to this!
It looks absolutely amazing!
The hoof is my favorite part!
(I saw it first off! )

This isn't an elk skull, it's a cow skull (as in bovine, not as in "female elk/cow elk").Β  Elk and others in the deer family have an open area at the top of their nasal passages right under the eye socket, which this one lacks. Cows are also bulkier, wider, whereas elks are longer in the nose and slimmer. Cow vs Elk comparison (my skulls- cow on left, elk on right): sta.sh/029myx1kyvy Another angle, cow in back, elk in front: sta.sh/01rulgt470e3

Oh, wow! I was told by a couple hunters that this was an elk, I assumed that they would know better than I. However, I believe you are correct. The comparison is quite clear in showing the differences. The place where I found the skull was near an elk preserve, so I assumed (after asking a couple hunters) that she was probably poached and dumped. The dump site is still a little suspicious to me, maybe even more so now that it is not an elk. The skull was quite apparently hidden, and there were not other remains near it. Just a head.Β

So cool T___T Living in the LA County, we don't get this. The best I found was a full rabbit skull, but my mum wouldn't let me take it home >:/

This is beautiful, I love the simplicity of the black and white.
I have a canine skull (unsure of what it is exactly, thinking it may have belongs to a poor abandoned dog that was left in the forest) that I have been wanting to paint, but have been so unsure. This is excellent inspiration.

Could be a coyote! I'm cleaning a couple coyote pup skulls at the moment. Badger skulls also look a lot like dogs. I hope it wasn't somebodies lost pet, that would be so sadΒ Β

Originally my uncle (who gave it to me, he found it) thought it was a young bear skull, since it was surrounded with tufts of black bear-like fur, but after comparing it to other bear skulls, I have a strong feeling that is isn't. Perhaps it is a coyote.

I actually am! I have a badger, opposum, and a one horned bull (with no horn case) that are cleaned and ready to be comissioned right now. This finished deer is for sale: fav.me/d6qohv9 I also have 11 more bulls (lots with BIG horns and cases) that are REALLY close to being ready for cleaning and comissioning if you're patient! If you're interested, note me and I can send you pictures of any of the skulls you might be interested in. i can do pretty much whatever you want on them, or you can give me a rough idea and let my artistic-heart run wild!

Wow! Seriously cool! I dont see why anyone would want to retouch it, looks pretty perfect to me the way it is now! Does she have a name?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lettielooo In reply to Plopomon [2013-10-12 05:22:56 +0000 UTC]

I don't call her by name, I feel like if she had one I could never comprehend it. But I have dreamed about her before. Once I dreamed that her head was re-fleshed and hanging in front of me in bed,she whispered something to me, but sadly I could not make it out and immediately woke up. The second time, I dreampt that I entered an operating room holding a paintbrush, my fellow surgeons turned to me and told me that it was time to operate. When they stepped aside, I found that my patient on the table was my she-elk. The doctors encouraged me to hurry and get started, time was running out. They pushed me towards her and all I could do was shake my head and try to explain to them that I was an artist, not a surgeon.Β

A friend of mine in college who is studying philosophy interprited my dreams this way: as an artist, it isn't my job to change the world--it's is, however, my job to project things the way I see them through art. This elk, I might add, was illegally poached. I found her at the dump-site, decapitated and hidden on an abandoned lumber-trail while I was out hiking. I am currently seeking permission to legally own the skull from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, because technically I should not have brought her home. There is something about the head of an animal that emboidies some kind of spirit, it is untouchable. I, as and artist, have touched it, and I don't plan on letting go
