It's an interesting effect having the administration behind the table be in focus instead of the troops. It seems to put forth the idea that the people in the back are sort of 'all the same' in a way. I certainly know they're not, of course, but the focus makes it seem like they're all blending together into one, less sharply defined category.
Crazy.. I wish them all luck, and your friend as well. Must be sort of tough seeing your freind go like that. Or do you feel something else?
Interesting shot. Was there a reason you focused it like that?
Critique-wise, I'd offer that the bottom left corner would be better cut off a bit more so that you didn't have an out-of-focus area there, which would make the whole table scene be in focus and give the image a bit more balance.
Also, stylistically, it's curious how there's so much empty factory wall space at the top of the shot. Was there a reason you included that?
It almost seems like this might be more of a personal meaning shot than a shot you were attempting to portray something specific in.

The focus is the way it is for purely technical reasons; I wanted some shallow depth of field, so I focused on the foreground. The negative space up top is just to emphasise the size of the space, plus the image is mostly vertical lines. I had initially cropped some of the right off, but then I decided that as a piece of documentary work it wouldn't be proper. I don't think I had a particular meaning in mind when I composed this--I just wanted to capture a facet of the deployment process. Obviously, all the soldiers wearing tan are shipping out; anyone in green is administrative and will stay on base, at least for the time being.
Thanks so much for your detailed comment. I'm not sure how I feel about Morris finally going on tour. He's been talking about it, planning and training for it, for more than a couple of years, so it's not like it's a surprise. I guess I'm happy for him that he gets to put that training to use doing something he feels is important. A small part of me is worried for his safety, of course, but in all odds he'll be fine. I'm going to miss him, mostly. Thanks again.
