Description developing a new approach to painting, for these its all about different harmonies(color, light shadows, shapes, composition) no refs or any photographs were used for these. Its all about staying loose and suggestive. The result will give that realism can be achieved without any kind of detail work. And that detail will only be a question of further definition on what can be seen on these panels.

It really redefines the way I want to paint, and they're stunning all on their own without the use of details. I don't normally comment on deviantart; however, after seeing these thumbnails/roughs I couldn't resist. After seeing your interview with "Level Up!" on Youtube I had to check you out and I can't help but love this method. If only I could use colors to this effect! I always end up with something muddy, or something that doesn't even come close to realism, and I lose any desire to polish them past "sketch point". Seeing something like this that just makes the colors, composition, values, and mood all good from the start just make so much more sense to what I've been doing. Thank you for sharing and doing what you do.Β

those really show the, in my humble opinion, greatest part of your art. You manage to create amazingly complex and detailed paintings without defining even one detail. When seen close it is a rough bunch of shapes and brushstrokes, though they make immensely deep paintings when seen together...

And each one of them can definitely go somewhere. Nice.

I love these cause every one of them hits all the right spots with me. there's a consistent atmosphere in there i've always enjoyed in an image and it's like now you've quantified it. amazing.

yes!, that I think is the key, this year I'd like to see a change in my pictures in the same direction, I call it "abstraction", my main problem for now is about simplification, important for abstraction. One day....I think really is the key.

I find getting effective but quick speedpainting etc hard to do because I am so fussy... But you make it look so easy! Do you just highlight the main areas of what you want to paint like dark areas and light areas? And do you then add detail where needed??? This amazing and inspirational!!

Is there anything special you did rendering wise? I've seen that you like to use the lasso tool.

They kinda remind me of Pixar's colorscripts, but in an more abstract style. You gotta livestream an session of these, can't wait to try out this method for my school's project. I'm in the concept stage now, so this method may be really handy.Nah, its revolutionary!

Hi I really like these. Colors and smudgy shapes somehow make me see more , i could say i see some crazy details that aren't actually there
Can i ask, do you use references or just paint whatever comes to your mind? It's amazing anyway

leventep In reply to Jun-sui [2013-05-09 10:56:23 +0000 UTC]

thank you! for this kind of painting no and the subject emerges as i paint from abstract shapes

When you start one of these, do you know exactly what you are trying to get to, or is it more something that evolves along the way?

i usualyl dont have a plan, so the subjects evolves as i go

I like this, how big are these images when you work on them individually? Or when you work on a few, I'm assuming you're doing a few at a time

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

leventep In reply to JRettberg [2013-05-09 08:54:47 +0000 UTC]

thanks!,they are actually quite big, but i zoom out a lot as i paint.I end up doing about 4-5 of them in a 20 min session sometimes longer sometimes quicker.

Awesome, after staring at each panel for a few seconds the detail seem to unravel in my head.

leventep In reply to ShiNiQ [2013-05-09 08:52:50 +0000 UTC]

your brain does the reading and interpretation for you based on all these visual harmonies, so you dont need small detail accuracy to indicate that you actually have detail

IzzyMedrano [2013-05-08 16:38:10 +0000 UTC]

What is the philosophy behind the harmonies that gives it the suggestion of photo-reality? My colors and shapes and whatnot tend to end up looking oversaturated and animation-y really fast, when I don't take care to reel them in. What sort of studies/ homework do you recommend to get that shit under control!? lol

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

leventep In reply to IzzyMedrano [2013-05-08 16:44:16 +0000 UTC]

try to zoom out from the painting and paint the block in that way, only zoom in when you have discovered something that has harmony, your brain will read the small thumbnail and re read it after every stroke. Shif colors in a subbtle way never make extreme shifts.

let me know on the results, i am curious to know how well this approach work when several artists try it.I am hoping that there is a significant improvement on several artist levels
