I'm high key obsessed with clouds and the sky, lolol, so I was pretty dang excited for the #cloud theme today
If I could, I'd live up in those glorious white clouds in a heartbeat and sail the afternoons away with nothing but a little sky sailboat ~  Ahhh why is my happy place so out of reach ahaa :'>

SAAAAME. I always end up with characters who live in the sky, because I'm obsessed with clouds and that big beautiful blue expanse.

So awesome, and that boat is calling my name haha. xD

Great job! The circles, for some reason, give me a feel that it's kind of like a dream catcher, and what I'm seeing within the dream catcher is this view.

You too ^^
You used paints for the color right?

Yeah, it's watercolor :> (aside from the little hues you see in the cloud lines--those are digitally added, haha) ~

Great. I've never tried watercolor painting before and before I get busy from school again I want to learn it. Can't stay horrible with colors forever

How do you avoid the colors from covering an area larger than you wanted it to?
Like for example if you wanted to paint the inside of a circle without crossing the lines how do you prevent the paint from seeping out of the inside of the circle?

Lol, gotcha! It's honestly just gonna take a little bit of trial and error to see where those "comfort zones" for the paint are. But one thing I could say is to not go overboard on the water. The more water you add to your brush, the further the paint spreads and bleeds--so again, just practice to find and see what's too much and too little :>

Also, it helped that the circles had pretty thick lines. If you look close at some of the cloud edges, you can see that the paint did actually go over the lines..Now I was using quite a bit of water while filling in the sky, so it probably comes down to being careful, minding the water level in the brush, and having thicker lines for support ~

I see..thank you ^^
Do you think watercolor is a good way to start trying painting? I don't have a really steady hand so i struggle with lines while painting, since I mostly did traditional art and had my elbow resting on the table for support, while for painting i had to angle the brush or had to avoid smudging the paint. Also im not used to not being able to erase the mistakes i made while painting. Do you have any help with that?

My pleasure :>
Actually I first got into paint with acrylic--I absolutely love it, and it will probably always be my main paint medium. But watercolor seems to be a simpler, "fill with flat color" type of painting, where as with acrylic and oil paints, you can build a lot more depth and realism. So it kinda depends on what you're going for. If you wanna just get used to adding color to your drawings and not worry about too much about shading and depth, then watercolor might be the way to go. Just don't start with oil paint, lol (the paint takes forever to dry, and you won't get anywhere fast).
Also, as far as the hand issue, you can absolutely lay your canvas/paper down on a flat table for painting--I do that probably half the time. Do what ur comfortable with ;D

And for "erasing" mistakes, I'd say there's probably a little more grace in that area with acrylic over watercolor. W/ acrylic, once the paint dries, you can go back over it and do pretty much anything (and acrylic dries fast). Watercolor is a little trickier to fix stuff--as far as I've seen in my little experience. You can't exactly go over an area w white, so u pretty much have to work around it and make the mistake work, or possibly try a whiteout with white acrylic paint, then go back over with watercolor (but idk if that actually works--that's just hypothetical lol).
Good luck and all the best with whichever paint you decide to try! ;D

I'm thinking of coloring my characters with acrylic paint, and watercolor when I do landscapes. so how do you add depth..? For example I'm coloring the hair, how do I make it look more realistic?

Lexidus In reply to Skyilere [2017-11-03 08:01:05 +0000 UTC]

Well for both paint mediums, depth generally comes with more layers, esp in watercolor (the more pigment you add in wtercolor, the darker it gets). W/ acrylic thats also true for the most part, but there's more to creating depth than just adding darker shades (depending on what ur drawing). In acrylic, youre building a 3D shape in 2D space (more so than watercolor imo), so you also have to account for textures, blending, smooth edges, highlights, shadows, etc. It's kinda hard to explain how to do hair in words, but there's TONS of walkthroughs, tutorials, and videos online--just search em up. A basic rule of thumb for hair tho is not to draw every individual strand, but not to draw it all as one block either. Strands are grouped together to form thicker strands/waves. It's also good to blend the hair shades and not leave the shadows/highlights too blocky like in anime style.

The best thing I can say is to observe and study lots of other art and how other artists do it, then slowly attempt it for yourself. You'll get the hang of it :> sry these are so long x'D
