This is an excellent sample of rainbow obsidian from Modoc County California. It is in the hand of Mr. Frank Newman who operates a wholesale mineral business called Outback Rocks. He is located in New Pine Creek, Oregon. His yard runs parallel to a street that marks the state line between California and Oregon.

Rainbow obsidian as you can see is a banded natural glass that refracts light at different wavelengths depending upon the angle of incidence. Colors include mauve, olive green and cerulean blue. The piece depicted here is of the highest quality. Its wholesale price is $10 USD per pound or higher. In contrast common banded obsidian wholesales at 50 cents a pound. Mr. Newman has an export arrangement with a Chinese buyer. Large pieces of this obsidian are exported to China by the ton. There they are ground and polished into beautiful objects. These include the perfect stone spheres that are used in kinetic water sculptures.

I was shown a pile of this prized obsidian that stood as tall as the horse that Mr. Newman kept in a paddock adjacent to his rock yard.
