Description
Vanille and Fang from Final Fantasy XIII, in the rooftop garden above the old schoolhouse in Oerba. For the Prompts: home, history, gentle, flower.I found the ruins of Gran Pulse and Oerba quite eerie, and Vanille and Fang dealt with it all remarkably well. I imagine them taking a moment to mourn, though, away from the rest of the group.
Trying out some different colour tones yet again, this time inspired by [link] Painted with Corel PainterX, and an Intuous3 tablet.

The only thing I find not to be drawing me into this picture is that they seem to be lost in their own thoughts to the point that I can't tell why they're embracing; their body language says they're close and trusting each other but the way neither of them is looking at the other diminishes this impression somewhat. I'd say I expected the dark-haired girl's eyes to be turned downward as if to check how her friend is doing.
I feel reluctant to post this because what I'm getting from the picture is that whatever happened prior to this is so devastating that they're both locked on to thinking about it and how it impacted them individually, so it's likely that looking lost in separate thoughts is deliberate - it's just that it doesn't quite sync with the embrace, an action that suggests the sharing of thought or emotion.
Everything else I only have praise for: the colour palette, the range of textures, the atmosphere, the variation in body shapes & postures, etc. (In short, love it - but since critique was asked for I thought I'd give it a close, scrutinising look.)

Now that you've pointed it out, I see what you mean! Their current detachment isn't intentional. I was trying for subtle emotions with Fang (with the dark hair) and struggling with her likeness - and lost track of the bigger picture. Fang has turned out looking a bit less emotional than I wanted, too. I'll try letting her look down at Vanille and see how it works.

I was just browsing your gallery when this picture struck my eye. It has such a subtle sweetness to it despite the obvious sadness, which I think as an artist is very hard to capture and you did it excellently! The detail alone is amazing but their expressions are very deep too, like they're having inner conflicts... -sigh- so pretty. I love pretty art~

I was aiming for a rare moment of softness and bittersweet sadness for these characters, so I'm very glad that came through. And for preference I typically end up painting pretty things

I had always thought that they might be privately sad about everything, especially in Oerba. This is absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time...makes me sad just looking at them

This is a good picture for one of the prequel chapters to XIII; the one that states how Vanille and Fang were the two girl-children in which sadness and anger were born (as well as the desire for one to become a l'Cie.)
