"Such things are worn to impress, not to dance."

We know fella on the right, but who is lady on the left...
Ah, what a mystery!
Someday I'll tell...
Okay, I'll tell today. I've drawn her before, it's Angelica Andelswitz, Andy's aunt [1] and legal caretaker, who stands by him since their life paths crossed:
I wanted to make this work first of the year, but with all the mess start of year has been I never found will (due to contest loss and later coronavirus) and time (due to catching up on commissions) to add final details. And why did I finish it now? Bc I feel better, and that;s the way I wanted to enter 2020, much like these two going to enter the room and captivate people's attention.
In terms of story, by the time this scene takes place, relationship between him and Angelica seem to be distant due to Andy pretty much being busy with events of his life that start to bring him to Baxtor's "social/community" level and unlike his partner, Andy is very eager to interact with them [2]. However, all this "social ladder rising" leaves Angelica and their overall household unaffected, which creates distance between aunt and nephew who before interacted much like mother and son.
Angelica isn't person to complain or spill her sorrows, and not to Andy specifically as he showed emotional deafness and avoidance when it comes not only to other's emotions, but to his own [3]. So, he is out there having his life, while her life is pretty much same and in case you forgot, Andy committed a crime, and consequences and emotional burden of it fell on Angelica - as if because Andy is so unaffected by it, she had "to suffer for them both".
However, no matter how careless towards feeling of his aunt Andy appears, it his actions that show him at least being fond of her. And this time, situation seemed ordinary - he is going to meet Baxtor at New Year's party and they will have great time one way or another (Happy New Year ) while Angelica will be alone at home as she has no friends [4] and no family outside of Andy [5] to spend it with.
Yet no.
This isn't what happened as you can see.
Andy took her with him. Gave her dress "to impress" and entered with her alongside.
There are some metaphors to be read - from them standing atop of the ladder, which can be interpreted as "social ladder" and he refuses to go there without her and lifts her to his now high standing to fact their outfits match, yet to Andy it's less of "couple thing" and more as to signal they are one of the kind, in this case - family tied.
In short explanation:
he didn't leave her behind.
It didn't end in him leaving to pursue life with Baxtor and forgetting about person who filled role of mother he was robbed of.
It didn't end in Angelica being all alone and depressed over how isolated she is now after everything.
Instead, it's not their "end".
Instead, they are together.
Much like years ago she brought him to her world, it's time for him to bring her to his.
:')
Notes and references:
- [1] Angelica is commonly refered as Andy's aunt for simplification. She is actually first cousin once removed to Andy, meaning one of her grandparents was a sibling to Andy's father grandparent.
[2] Andy being Andy is fascinated by himself now having such far reach rather than that he is fascinated with "important" people and their families.
[3] In which we will dive deeper later.
[4] As people turned on her, blaming her (in their eyes) poor parenting for Andy's actions. Such assumption is wrong, in my eyes, considering she legally adopted him after array of families and at age whe Andy was pretty conscious and self-sufficient to the point she described him as "little adult".
[5] She was from Andelswitz family since she doesn't support their religious and other views. And her only contact - her sister, made quite offensive remark about Angelica not having a child - "...as if [you] try your best to die alone".
