The fact that they've made so many mainish characters (and even main main characters) weird looking really cements it as cool.

FFIX is still my favorite from that era...it's the only one of the PSX games that actually felt like a "fantasy" alongside some grim cyberpunk stuff...part of me thinks it being too cheerful is what made it get forgotten in later years up but I can only guess.

Yeah, it's definitely a favorite of mine, too. Some parts of it are kind of frustrating, but there's still a ton of it I absolutely love, both tone/story-wise and mechanically.
