Tumblr version.

And now a note from blue-spectrum, followed by the drabble!

A/N: I feel like I should warn you for depersonalization, even if it’s brief! Just in case, I’m not an expert on trans issues, so let me know if you have any suggestions about my approach to transRin. Other than that, enjoy the beautiful art!

Sousuke was content following his parents around the festival, silently smiling at how the elderly couple tried the food and beamed at each other like it was the very first time they had gone out together like this. He trailed behind them, carrying some prizes he had won for them, happily munching on his pork cutlet.

That is, until a dashing figure made him stop in his tracks and almost choke on his pork.

Rin had decided to split with Gou and walk on her own for a while to try and get some confidence. She couldn’t rely on her sister’s comforting presence forever, even if it was soothing to be sure of her role next to her. Gou continued to be so supportive, only commenting once that she’d miss Rin’s bulk once she started the transition. Rin looked at her hands, trying not to think of her broad shoulders and how they made her look in casual clothes.

Too telling, she thought, remembering how the last blouse she had tried looked on her. She loved that blouse, but she couldn’t bear how wrong the image in the mirror looked-

“Excuse me”

A voice brought her back to the reality of the festival and the fact that she was wearing a women’s yukata that probably didn’t look good on her bulky figure. Perhaps this guy had noticed and was going to mock her, and then she’d have to make a stand and her night would be ruined by yet another douche…

“I’m not good at this, I actually have no idea of what I’m doing…”

Rin swallowed and looked up to find the source of that deep, sheepish voice that seemed so honest and without any mean intent. The man was avoiding eye contact and his blush was obvious, his lopsided smile charming. Rin’s heart skipped a beat in hope.

“I just… this is cute and so are you, so I thought maybe you’d want it”, he finished, extending a huge, tanned hand in her direction. There was a tiny charm on his palm, a red shark and a teal colored shark-whale joined by a golden chain. It was definitely cute and definitely not what Rin had expected.

“I… thank you”, she whispered, taking the charm and blushing when their finger’s grazed.

“No problem”, the man said, seemingly just to fill the silence.

Suddenly, the crisp air felt too hot on Rin’s cheeks and she was at a loss of words, fidgeting with the tips of her red hair.

“Uhm, so… are you by yourself? I mean, I don’t think you are, that’d be- but, oh and I’m here with my parents, I’m not trying to scam you or anything, I just-” As the man kept talking, Rin grew more flustered and delighted, her smile spreading shyly on her face until she couldn’t hold back the laughter anymore.

The man startled at the clear sound, surprised by how its lower notes made his stomach jump.

“You are pretty bad at this”, she declared, gently removing a tear of mirth from the corner of her eye. “I… I’m Rin” she vowed lightly, looking at the man from under her eyelashes, deciding at the last moment to not give her family name.

“I’m Sousuke”, he vowed too, unsure of what to do with himself, scratching the back of his head. “Do you… like pork?”

“I do”, she voiced, puzzled. It was almost a question.

“They have some great pork cutlet at a stand just around the corner. Maybe you’d like to try it? Or chicken, the chicken is good too. Maybe some candy?”

Rin had to cover her mouth to stop herself from snorting. He had called her cute, but Sousuke was all kinds of charming on his own right. She’d love to spend more time with him, eating this or that, maybe even winning prizes together, talking and smiling and looking at his clear teal eyes… but then he’d find out, right? Looking that close, it wouldn’t be hard to notice. And there was no way he’d like that surprise.

“I’m sorry”, she swallowed hard, regretting the words as they were leaving her lips, but more afraid of the heartbreak that was sure to come sooner or later. “I actually have to go, my sister is waiting”

“Oh. I see” Sousuke’s crestfallen expression made her chest burn, but experience had taught her this was the best choice in the long run, so she turned her back to the man, walking fast to get away from the promise she was dying to make but couldn’t bear to keep.

I want to meet him again, she thought as she run, her pink yukata fluttering around her feet. The knot in her throat grew as fear crippled up her spine, , She clutched the charm in her hand, bringing it up to her lips so it could graze her broken smile as she got lost in the crowd.
