Description The streets yielded nothing but silence.

All of the sensible city-dwellers had gone to sleep long ago. And the non-sensible ones? They slept as well.

The normally busy roads were still, not a single vehicle in sight. The only visible light glowed dimly down on the empty sidewalk from a dejected street lamp that flickered weakly every so often.

Any noise emitted by the night was engulfed in silence. One single sound escaped the embrace of the quietness, which was that of a distant church tower's chime, its bell echoing the time throughout the city.

Midnight.

What none were aware of, at least, none of the human race, was that not everything was as still as they assumed it was on the street that night.

A lithe shape slunk along a faded brick wall, keeping carefully to the shadows. His ears erect and his nose twitching, he continued his careful tread, following a path that only he had ever walked.

As he approached the dim yellow glow of the street lamp, he became aware of another presence, not far away. He crouched, his whiskers jolting slightly as he scented the air once more.

His nose did not betray him.

Movement caught the corner of his vision, and as he turned, his blue eyes were met with green.

A growl of warning rumbled in his throat, and the other returned it with his own, before stepping out of the shadows with striped ginger fur on end and teeth bared.

"Show yourself."

The blue-eyed arched his back. "Arthur. You take me for a fool?"

The ginger tomcat paused. "Lukas?"

The blue-eyed stepped out, his silver and cream coloured fur on end.

"That's right."

Arthur relaxed his aggressive stance very slightly. "Why are you here? This territory is mine."

Lukas's ear twitched. "You hold no control over this particular corner, do you? Can a tomcat not take a simple walk anymore? I come here in peace."

"I see."

Arthur did not look entirely convinced, but he sheathed his claws and sat down under the lamp. After a moment, Lukas cautiously joined him.

"So," Arthur said, licking a paw absent mindedly, "what brought you to this part of the city?"

Lukas hesitated. "I've been... uneasy," he said finally. "I feel as though something's up."

Arthur stopped licking his paw. "You too?"

A nod. "I've been having dreams."

"As have I."

"What sort?"

Green eyes that were looking elsewhere narrowed. "We are not allies, Lukas."

"I know."

"I will not say."

Lukas scratched an ear. "I understand."

Overhead, a nightbird let out an eerie cry. The dim light flickered once again.

Arthur raised himself to his paws. "The night grows old."

Another nod.

"Return to your part of the city for now, Lukas."

And with that, Arthur turned away from him and padded silently off into the night.

The street light flickered off.
