Description - if you are sensitive don’t read on -

The high grass on the field waved in the warm wind of a late Monday evening in June. A pieceful silence hung over the property of Dark Lake Stables.
Alex, the county vet, had just finished his examination of the injured horses in the Nightmare’s Stable. Rebel Yell was in good health again, though she seemed to suffer from the loss of her foal. The mare had an unusual temper, but it was visible that time would heal this wound. Artibeus on the contrary seemed very apathetic on the surface, but none of the staff would bet on that. The one with the best mood was Freak, who really seemed to have enjoyed his weeks hanging from the ceiling in a harness with his leg in plaster. Sometimes he used it as a swing. “I would go mad if he could whistle as well...” some said.

As the man came running down the tree shadowed driveway it was visible that the peace was about to be shattered as he startet muttering something of an accident, that they needed a vet, on the country road that passed by Dark Lakes southern wall. Alex, Charlotte Miro and the Boss hurried to Alex’ SUV and headed for the place the man directed them to.

A drunken driver had wrecked a trailer with 15 horses that were about to be sent to the slaugherhouse. Some witnesses had already caught the terrified horses that seemed to be unharmed and tried to calm them down. Others had less luck. Alex sighed as he went back to his car, passing by some lethal injured horses. There was work for him to do.

The Boss was seething with rage. If the driver hadn’t already been brought to the hospital... . He stepped into the trailer and saw the mare. She was leaning on the trailer wall. With her eyes she stared black holes into the air. She stood there motionless, almost lifeless. It was impossible to tell which color she head, she was covered with dirt, sore wounds and dry blood. Her breed seemed to be “Undead Skeleton” (He gave himself a mental slap in the face for his own sarcasm.).
The Boss reached out a hand with one of the treats that he always had in his pocket... She didn’t even snort.
He turned around and walked out of the trailer. A small “business man” caught his attention as he said: “Horrible... horrible. A loss of 7000 Euros... not calculated the trailer.... Horrible.” With a voice cutting as a sharp knife the Boss raised his voice. “EXCUSE me...”

The last one... Alex turned toward the trailer. Charlotte Miro was shouting “Hurry” angrily into her mobile phone. The body of a white horse was salvaged from the trailers wreck. Then someone brought the mare out.
“Let her stay in there.” Alex said, but the man continued to walk slowly down the ramp with her. She was shaking and staggered with every step she took on her outgrown hooves. The poor girl had been neglected.
“Don’t you understand. There is no need to bring her down here, she suffered enough.”
“Her owner said she will be brought to a stable, she shouldn’t be killed.” He answered stoically. Alex sighed.
“Man, that’s ridiculous, that mare can collapse every second. She won’t last a day.”
“Don’t tell that to me. Tell him.” He pointed toward the little “business man”, who was having a dispute with the Boss. Alex rushed to them.
“That’s cruelty to let her suffer like this. I can put her down and she won’t have pain anymore.” The vet growled.
”You can’t imagine how little this matters to me, they might as well have shot it. It is not my concern.” He waved with several bank notes in his hand and turned to his car. He honked at a black horse trailer in his way, which was trying to find a parking place that was nearest to the wrecked trailer. Alex eyes widened as he recognized the coat of arms on it.
“Just tell me you didn’t...”
...

Background Story.

Another obsession of the Boss. I guess it’s not because he likes to have a rescue farm... ^^’ This is something personal

Sorry for the low quality, but this is actually a “next to my school notes” – sketch. Well I’m kind of jumping *kalmakoira ‘s neglected adoption band. As I saw them I was very touched, because this was not the first time I saw something like this. I even saw it in real life. The sad thing is... the horse didn’t make it. So this is maybe my way of bringing her back to life and giving her a second chance to be loved and cared for...

Her story will of course continue for a while.

wow awesome and well written story and sad but yeah i totally understand, my stable had gotten this mare and her older foal and the mare was skin and bones literally we only had her a week and she laid down and didn't have the strength to stand up and no one knews how long she was down so my two friends and I stayed in the barn from 7pm to 12 midnight trying to get this horse up she would try so hard too and thats what kept us trying. we were pulling on her mane and pushing her into the position and having to put her legs in the right spot but when she tried she just couldn't make it! we even attempted to making a pully and try to get her butt up but no use, . . so the idea of saving a horse that had been neglected is awesome even if it sometimes doesn't end the way you want it to

sad story -.-'
but the fact is that more than half of them won't make it. Sometimes putting them down seems a humane way... But I just never give the hope up that they will recover again

Me too.. I must admit I have no real imagination of her looks yet. I guess she will evolve with every picture^^' Do you already have a plan how your horse looks?

Yeah I know how she looks ^^ She is the sort of red bay with questionmark-shaped blaze and two socks and a whole bunch of scars. As she is thoroughbred she will look like one, so yeah. I am looking forward to see how your horse turns out.

me to

I guess she stays a Thouroughbred as well, her background story will fit. But she will just live on DLS, she don't have to run for her food ever again.

I can't even count the times I saw such sad teribble things, and wanted to change them in my drawings.

Very simple and with a high impact drawing. I struck me from the thumbnail. Great work. And sad story, I'm curious what will hapen to the mare.

ps. Love the boss he rocks

I'm sorry to hear that. I know what you mean it's terrible to see it. The mare that I mean did not survive unfortunately... it was really tragic, she was already over the worst, but then she got a bad colic. We were all devasted....

Thanks hun, I'm curious too. Let's see how he does.

^^ I start to like him actually, I guess I even will find a name for him in the near future... his character takes a lot more shape than before, but well you'll see

To be honest, I don't know if I had acted like that in real life, or if I had given in to put her down... It's difficult to decide wether they can or want to live... well you usually see if they have given up on themselves... heart breaking really

It is. I wish I will never have to see such things in life again, they're heart-breaking. Its sad about the mare poor girl... but she won't be forgot and more important she was cared for in her final days.

That's the best part when making a character, the character comes to life, and grows a complex personality. I love it when that happens.

I know what you mean..

Poor horses... both those int he trailer and in the stable.

Very restraint of your Boss too. It's interesting seeing into his character more and more

Have to admit, I'm rather envious of how you can bring an image like this to life with little but a few pencil strokes.

Yeah I think his person slowly is taking shape... it's funny how he evolves with the stables... there is actually already some moderate "realationship" drama involved ROFL... I simply have to survive this week^^ and than I will not go out anymore, just DRAW

I actually had the time to study sketches and Paintings of Salvador Dali, Franz Marc and Leonardo DaVinci... That helped me a lot to figure out how few things you need to actually see a horse... My art teacher said that drawing is making a fool out of the brain luring it with some information to percieve things that in "reality" aren't there... I always was better with drawing than with colours^^'

yeah - he's becoming more and more 'real' so to speak. *chuckles* sounds like you've got a handful there

there now you'll get through it alive, promise

it's a good thing you can take what you see and put it into action - something I've got very hard to do. The mind does 'fill in' the bits that aren't there in a drawing, to create the image in our minds. It's a gift to be able to make use of that. Nice to see how you put that into action - especially in comparison to those drawings.
