Its back is made of a very porous bone that over time expands the holes toward the surface, creating cavities. During winter hibernation the tortoise buries itself partly underground, leaving only its back above the surface, this is when soil, plants, and mud birds (the type of birds seen in the other pictures) make their way into the cavities. The mud birds is a near flightless species, so finding a tortoise to make their home in is very important to their survival.
The turtle itself can eat various plants, but especially loves the type of mushrooms that cultivate nearly year-round on top of them.
