Description Respect to #Stucky stans, but this was my first ever ship before ships were shipped. Pretty sure even 7 year-old me realized deep down it was because I wanted to be Dazzler and date Captain America, but I digress. The Infinity War trailer stirred up some things (mmmbeardy Steve), so I drew this.

MCU costumes are great to look at but less great to draw. So. Many. Pieces. They’re especially tough for characters who don’t have one (yet?), but I think she sorta kinda almost works.

I do 'stand and smolder' all the time, so I wanted to go for something more candid and sweet. The vibe ended up being more toothpaste commercial, but whatever. They’re cute. I love them. #Aliseve

I will never stop being impressed by just how many different variations you come up with for our girl Dazzler. It's insane (in the best possible way)! You've done a couple of MCU-inspired versions before and this one is just as great as those ones.

I'm digging the asymmetrical look. I've actually noticed that it's your go-to when to do more of an edgier look, especially if she's got the eye makeup. The level of detailing on her costume is truly magnificent, especially on her bodice and her gauntlets. I can't imagine how long it to do the choker and the matching section on her gauntlet. It seems like such a small thing to pick out, but I actually think one of my favourite bits of this look are her gloves. I love me some fingerless gloves that aren't actually fingerless cause they've got a second colour. Yeah, I'm weird. I'm curious to know if you used an actress as the basis for her look here. I know you lost Brie Larson to Carol Danvers, so it's probably not her.

Now onto Steve. My God. One, I never knew about this ship and I kind of actually think it's genius. Dazzler, for me, is hard to pair with folks because I always feel no one is good enough for her or the guys I'd probably pair her with are ones I'd want to be gay. Anyhoo... Spectacular job on Steve. You've been ridiculously successful in capturing Chris Evans' likeness. Hell, even the hair looks super touchable. Beyond that, I'm impressed by how well you've rendered his costume. Those MCU costumes are not easy to draw (I tried my hand at the Black Panther one, but it's been sitting in my sketchbook because it's that hard), so major props are in order here.

Toothpaste commercial vibe or no, this is yet another fabulous Dazzler piece that I'm absolutely 100% here for.

First off, fingerless gloves that aren't? YES! Not sure when I fell in love with those but they're now a staple for many a gloved character.

This look is really just another tweak to my first "edgy" Dazz and for a myriad of reasons, is as edgy as I like taking her.  Dazz is one of the least MCU-ready looking characters, what with their penchant for multiple textures and straps and pieces and such but taking her in the more heroic direction instead of performer made things a little easier... Though I'll always want her film debut to be on stage and in silver.

I've always struggled with pairing up Dazz for the same reasons and any time I've drawn her with a guy it was always with the expressed intent that they were just sexy fun time pals. However, she and Steve, specifically MCU versions? Yeah, I would so go down with that ship. I think the characters strike a nice balance in personality. I appreciate that you can see Evan's likeness, because I'm still unsure. Funny thing, when I was a kid, drawing celebs was my fave but it's such a rarity now - I mostly just go for an "inspired by" feel. As for Ali, no specific actress but it was probably a subconscious amalgam of Dazz runner-ups, Katie Cassidy and Evan Rachel Wood. They, along with Amber Heard and Kylie are who I've looked at most over the last few years when focusing on Dazz face.

Thanks so much for the feedback. Always fun to read your thoughts and much appreciated.

I know exactly when my affection for the fingerless gloves that aren't happened... Rogue's costume from the ReLoad era. As much as I resent Rogue's popularity, her fashion game is strong.

It certainly seems like edgy is the direction Marvel has taken her in as a means of making her relatable to people outside of her core audience. Do you think that Marvel should swing back around and try modelling her looks off of the stage looks worn by Britney, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, etc.?

Are there any canonical pairings that you actually support for Dazzler? I admittedly don't mind her with Beast. I kind of like the idea of her being with Gambit and having a kind of open relationship. (Though I also like shipping Gambit with Frenzy)

Those are all great visual choices for Dazzler in terms of actresses. Evan Rachel Wood and Amber Heard are definitely very much in line with how she looks canonically. The thing I like about both is they're similar with regards to having this All-American appearance that has an edgy undercurrent. That's the line that Dazzler has to straddle. She can't just be a fluffy pop star a la T. Swift nor strictly an angry rock singer.

Ugh. "Edgy". I almost cringe whenever I hear that word now. I won't waste your time or this space on another diatribe, so I'll just say yes. Dazzler definitely needs to return to her glam roots... AS A PERFORMER. Part of the problem(s) redesigning Dazz is that too many approach her classic stage costume as a superhero costume, thus limiting their view on what Dazzler is and omg I'm off again. Sorry.

IMO... Dazzler, the performer, should were stage outfits.
Dazzler, the superhero, should wear superhero outfits.
Alison, the civilian, should have her own sense of style.
It's okay if there is occasional overlap. However, none of these should be designed by old straight men who think they know what's "trendy", nor should it be by hipster millennials unable to reach outside their default palette of multiple piercings, tropical hair and torn everything. A happy medium exists somewhere.

I have no comic ships for Dazz. I'm way more into her friendships. The more I try to think of one, the more I like the idea of her dating and having fun and not being locked into a relationship that defines her with readers. The amount of people still attaching her to Longshot is annoying. But I did briefly like the sorta, almost, not-quite hints that maybe she and Gambit would hook-up during the Hellbound story... The Rogue drama alone.

I suppose you're kind of giving it, but what's your number one advice for someone redesigning Dazzler? How do you find that happy medium? I've done so many designs for her and it's just impossible to land one that I like. A huge part of it has to do with the hair for me. The stage Dazzler to me would have long hair, but I can't get the image of a superhero Dazzler having short hair out of my head. Or is the happy medium that she'd be someone who wears wigs?

The punk Dazzler look we got during Bendis' tenure was designed by a gay man. However, the look we got was as a result of instructions he'd received. Kris Anka stated "When I was brought onto Uncanny, the first thing I was asked to do was design a new “punk” Dazzler that was specifically easy to cosplay." He'd previously done a Dazzler redesign that I thought was actually really chic. Have you seen that one? It's the grey and turquoise look with the super deep cut (tons of cleavage) and opera length gloves. The updated design from A-Force was by a dude, but I'm not sure how he identifies though. He was born in '73, so I guess that qualifies him as old...?

Yes! This! I'm actually like that with many female heroes. I'm more fond of their friendships and the idea of them playing the field rather than being immediately locked into a relationship that leads straight into marriage. It just seems so outdated to me. I'm so not here for Dazzler with Longshot either. I want a pan Longshot who sleeps around the Marvel Universe and leaves Dazzler the hell alone.

Thanks so much!

I'd like an Ali and Steve coupling in the comics, too, but I have this teeeeny tiny fantasy that Captain Marvel keeps getting pushed back because Fox/Disney is waiting on the merger to announce Brie Larson is actually doing a Dazzler film. Heh

That would be amazing and hey, you never know! I'm intrigued about how Fox are going to portray Ali in X-Men Dark Phoenix, I really hope she's disco Ali but I have a feeling she'll be Ultimate Dazz.

I have a feeling she'll be the Blink And You'll Miss Her Dazz.

At best, I see a Jubilee level role but even that is wishful thinking. Jubes got screwed over in Apocalypse, but at least they tried to make it look like she was going to be something.

Yeah I reckon it'll be a small role too but hey, you never know maybe they'll surprise us! I am looking forward to Dark Phoenix, some of the information that has come out looks very promising

Yes, poor Jubes she was great in the deleted scenes.
