Description I decided I'd better get with the program and learn how to paint... this is the result of my session today. I know it looks really tentative, and it is, but partially because I decided to back it off a bit. The shadows were too sharp before (Yay for cell-shading all the time) and I felt it wasn't appropriate for this particular picture. Also... this probably doesn't count as painting because it's essentially sketchy lineart with a few colors slapped on. Sheesh, I took like two hours on this thing and it looks like I did so much more work than I do for my comics!
Decided she reminds me of Annie Hughes once I finished this. Maybe it's the army green-ish color of her jacket?

Anyway, I looked at this tutorial [link] for guidance. I'll probably continue to practice little pieces like this. (Lol, sorry for the outgoing link... I had to use a url shortener because the old link apparently had an emoticon in it and we all know what DA does with that.)

This is really nice, especially for a first try! I like her hands a lot.

It might make sense to try, at least experimentally, something more like this: [link]

Yeah, that's probably a good idea since I don't know about the techniques of real painting. I should start learning.

What would you suggest?

Hmmm . . . just some things I have learned, it's good to have a solid base layer under any form in the painting, so that you don't have to wrangle with opacity. Also, there's an easy way to quickly blend colors to make smoother surface transitions, I can show you later. Really nice work!
