The best way to learn about lighting is to look at it everywhere you go and or look at lighting in tv shows too.
Check out the lighting in bars/restaurants and see how they light up the place.
My local applebees using lights over the table but they are dim. The lights are bright enough to use for reading but the light does not travel far from the table.
Red lobster uses a different lighting scheme than Mcdonalds.
Lighting is also a way to set up an atmosphere/feeling in a picture so you have to balance having things well lit and showing a particular atmosphere. Then there are compositional concerns too, viewers will look at the brightest/more obvious thing in the picture. For this scene its the light. You probably want the chars to be the focal point. Sometimes artistic concerns and realism conflict and you get to choose. My slant is to go for what you want to say than realism depending on the situation.
I would lower the brightness of the lamp and the background so the chars are the focal point. The picture is about them not the light.
Also if this place puts lights over the tables there would be light from the other lamps and the shadows would be dim because light bounces around. You probably would not have that directional shadow.
