I actually really DON'T think he got any 'sickness', to me he seemed perfectly reasonable most of the time-for sure where the Arkenstone was concerned, the only time when all that what happened really took it's toll on him was when the orc army attacked-but that was so-I don't know how to put it in words-have you noticed how young and scared he looked when he saw it?? he knows about war and OMG they were just thirteen, including those two 'boys', his closest family and yet it was expected of him to throw them into that meat grinder outside(as what? as 'kanonenfutter'??) without hesitation?? I mean, I think it was utterly understandable he kind of was looking for an 'escape' from it, subconsciously. there might be some kind of dragon curse left on that treasure-dragons are supposed to be magical creatures. after all, but I think that was just a very small part of it. plus in that case that leaves out Thror. Whom I never deemed all that 'mad' either-I mean, trying to sneak out with the Arkenstone was actually the most reasonable thing he could do to save his kingdom-once you know about the oath of the seven dwarf families, not to mention later he gave the ring of power-probably the only valuable thing left to him-to his son!! sorry, I think I got carried away a bit

it makes me think again and notice many things.I've never think about this that closely.

aw that's great if I made you love Thorin and the Durins more!  and don't forget about Thrain! that they tortured him exponentially until he lost his mind doesn't really count! otherwise he was really a good guy!! and ~doh~ all he ever wanted was a living son I still have *a little* hope that we'll see him in BoFA extended, that it wasn't an end of his story in DoS EE otherwise I wouldn never understand Gandalf-I mean, I'm pretty sure it was his intent to get caught in Dol Guldur and still he just waved away Thrain's last plea to promis him to tell Thorin he loved him with 'you will tell him yourself' like WHAT 
and yes, different opinions are a great reason to talk about things   I mean, of course I'm happy when someone thinks the same as me but having the same opinion about everything would be boring, when 'we' differ we can discuss it
