Description
Made in 50-60 hours circa, its binder is colored wax for the encaustic and diluted sometimes with linseed oil. The size is 42 x 24 cm and this is a wooden painting, with a preparation ground composed of colored arabic gum. The gold leaves were applied with heat.

"L'Européenne", a wonderful portrait dated from B.C. 117-138, during the reign of Antonins. The original is exhibited at the museum of Louvre. An exceptional commission which has been a real challenge for me, because of the meticulous brushstrokes and the wax which was applied with a very high temperature, to have the perfect textures with the first gesture. It was difficult but I have carried out this painting with a lot of pleasure. The copy of the gold mantle has asked knowledge and analyzes. My work in restoration was a good help to understand the stratigraphy of the painting.

This lady is wearing pearls with emerald. A green broach closes the mantle and a gold hairpin holds hairs.

Exhibition of the portrait: Following commentaries about the perception of the Fayum mummy portraits, I try a new background for the exposition of this particular works of art. Indeed, this kind of picture is nearest of the 3D than other paintings, due to the relief of the wax and the work on its wooden support. Some people are disturbed by a black background which deletes totally the approach of this 3D, like museum photographs which massacre the rendering of this little former masterpieces.

So, I try this kind of background with my own ways. I am sorry for the patterns but they helps to feel the 3D of this portraits which is particularly important for me. Thank you for the moderators to understand my researchs in that domain. I hope you like it.
