Chapter 1:
The Beginning of Everything
Hiya, readers! This is Dina Tatakai here (age 12)!! And I'm pretty sure that today I just managed to get out of the greatest mortal peril I've ever experienced in my life.
....And that's probably really something. Hehe.
Oh! Sorry~!! You people're probably wondering about what happened, not my opinion about it. Well, I'm not really one for theatrics. (Though my drama teacher says elsewise...)
So, anyways, a couple hours ago, Todd, my childhood friend, and I were hiking up a mountain, where there were tons of rumors about wild vivosaurs, dinosaurs revived from fossils, roaming around. We looked around for a pretty long time, but there wasn't a trace of a wild dino anywhere. But once we were about to head back, the ground started to shake, and we heard the rustling the trees. We looked at each other, then turned to see what was going on.
A minute later, we found ourselves face to face with an Allosaurus, with absolutely nothing to defend ourselves with.
Honestly, I'm sort of wondering how Todd, um, cajoled me into doing that. Considering the circumstances, it was absolutely suicidal.
..Uh, y'know what? Uhm, nevermind on that fancy language.. I-I'm just trying something out. Y-yeah.... Back to the life-threatening situation then..
Anyways, after a second or two of freezing in place, I took off with a running start, taking Todd's hand. The Allo started chasing after us, roaring furiously. At that, both of us started run even faster, though the adrenaline rush probably helped too. And on a second thought, I don't think I've ever seen Todd run that fast. Ever.
But before I could actually think about anything, we ended up stuck between a rock and a hard place, or rather, death and a cliff. Because the Allosaurus had just come out from the trees when we turned right around from the cliff-face.
"Well," I thought quite pessimistically, all hope gone, "if I'm going to die today, I guess I should be glad I'm not going alone. But I'm not gonna give up without a fight."
The Allo immeadiately came rushing towards us, andslowly, we shuffled backward unconsciously. I put up an arm around Todd, determined to take any chance we could take to survive, or at least go down trying (or maybe just going down period. There was a cliff.)
I felt my heart leap into my throat, beating fast from panic, and I was willing to bet that Todd felt the same too.
Just to say, I'm pretty sure I'm usually not that morbid a person. But, under those circumstances, can you really blame me?) We had either: die by an Allosaurus, die falling off a cliff, and probably die either way, hoping for a chance to escape or some sort of miracle to happen.
..Well, actually Option 3 worked. Without the dying part. Or any harm to anyone in general. Probably.
[Why does she sound like me here?]
Suddenly, there was a cry in the distance, and both of us turned our heads to see a figure in the sky closing the distance between us, fast. As it approached closer, I could see that it was a Pteranodon; a Pteranodon with a rider.
"Eek! A Pteranodon!" Todd cried, stating the obvious. Thanks Todd. If we weren't in mortal danger, I would probably have smacked him for that.
Anyways, as it came within range, the rider, a man dressed a bit like a cowboy (sorta) or something, called out to us, "Jump on! Both of ya!"
"Huh?!" Todd gasped.
"...Make that smack a yes. I'll just have to wait until we're out of mortal peril, though," I thought.
"Get a move on now!" the rider yelled. We were almost within the Allosaurus's reach when I gripped onto Todd's hand, ran, and made a leap of faith onto the Pteranodon Express. The rider grabbed my other hand and pulled me on.
"Yeeee-haw! Hold on, pards!" he said as we made our getaway, the Allosaurus running after us on land. After a while, once Todd and I relaxed, the man turned to us and spoke. "Whew, you folks all right?" he asked. I looked at Todd. He nodded, too scared to speak, and I did the same. As we got back to the ground, Todd gasped and shouted in amazement, "Wait! Y-you're ...Joe?!!
And at that I went, "Wait. A guy that awesome and heroic is named "Joe"?
...It's not like I sorta expected him to have a cooler name or anything. No offense to him, though. Ah, jeez. Anyways..
Joe nodded. "Yep, that's me. Surprised you know my handle, kid." he said, raising his voice over the wind.
"Of course I know you!" Todd cried fanboy-ishly. "You're the greatest Fossil Fighter in the whole world! Your Fossil Fighter skills are legendary! You're Joe Wildwest," he exclaimed, a bit late on that last part. And as Todd rants on about how amazing Joe is and how much he admired him, I couldn't help but think, "Our hero, AND the best fossil fighter ever is named, Joe?!!" I really shouldn't have. Too late, though, I guess. Oh, and I was still in shock too.
All of a sudden, we heard a ferocious roar from behind us, getting louder as the Allo closed the distance. Then Joe spoke up, "That Allosaurus is madder than a sack full'a hornets. We can't leave the mountain with it all riled up like this. Or folks'll get into deep trouble."
We took a minute of silence, for some random or terrible reason, to picture what kind of horribleness would happen if any other innocent people met with this wild Allo.
"Ain't no choice," he decided. "We gotta subdue the critter in a Fossil Battle."
With that out of the way, he guided his Ptera down and landed back onto solid dirt.
Turning to Todd, he asked, "How about it small fry? You up for it?"
"Ooooh my stomach! It hurts real bad! It must be that rotten banana that I ate in the morning. Yeah, that's it!" he whined. Sigh. Oh Todd. First chance to ever handle a vivosaur, and he chickens out. But that's what makes him sorta adorable, if not annoying. (Don't tell him I said that. He doesn't like being called cute.)
"Huh, fair enough," Joe said. Then he faced me, "Guess I'll be lending you one of these here Dino Medals instead," he said.
Surprised, a surge of excitement went through me from this once in-a-lifetime moment. (I think I got one of those so-happy-I-look-stupid-grins on my face too.)
..Joe presented me 4 medals. Huge and golden, each one had the image of a dinosaur head on it. Hesitating for a bit, I shrugged off my nervousness and stepped up, taking a closer look and holding my shaking hand above each of them.
Uh, maybe not that one, or this one... Darn it, I just can't decide which one I want, and that Allo's almost on us!!
..I hesitated, worried.
...Then I picked up the medal of the Aerosteon.
Suddenly, I felt a sudden pause come over me. Time seemed to stop.for a couple of minutes. A shiver ran down my body, making my blood run cold. Deep down, fear, no, absolute terror filled me.
And in front us was the Allosaurus, growling in anticipation. My mind started to shut down, and everything started shrieking and screaming at me to get away, away from that Dino Medal and forget that all of this ever even existed.
Right before those voices made me hit my limit and break down, a comforting.. maybe even familiar voice said, "Just calm down, remember what you're doing. People are relying on you here. Plus.." it, no, he sounded like a boy's voice, and I could just hear a smirk in his tone, "Isn't being a Fossil Fighter your dream?"
..That comment decked me like a visible blow. I shook my head. That's right. My dreams aside, he's got a point. I need to stop that Allo from hurting us and anyone else who would possibly come up here.
Nodding, I got ready and threw the medal, marking the beginning of everything.
