It looks like your DOF experiment worked, to me, anyway. Your character is sharply in focus while the background is just slightly out of focus. Not much, but enough to soften the focus.

I LOVE this so much, ESPECIALLY the hair. Zomgs, the hair. I would pet it but the stabbing probably wouldn't be worth it xD

I totally cheated on the hair and painted some of it in post-render

I don't think it's cheating at all! It's perfect. It honestly made it look that much more realistic

Looks good, the only critique I have is that the glare shows more from the guard of the pommel rather than than base of the blade, I would suggest moving it slightly higher up to the base of the blade
But as always great work, and the face has a Angelina Jolie look about her
