Description The inspiration for this comic was... well... me. I am nuts about correct grammar. I may not use it all the time myself, but I try my hardest to do so, and many people get irritated with me because I have a nasty little habit of correcting other people's grammar.

All of my friends and family can attest to this.

I don't smack people, though.

Sometimes I'd like to, but I don't.

This is hilarious! Reminds me of a conversation I saw on a TV show:

Teacher: I'll be away tomorrow so you'll have a substitute. I'm going to my sister's funeral.
Student: What did she die of?
Teacher: Ending a sentence with a preposition!

I totally get you about the being nuts about grammar thing. I'm somewhat anal retentive about it. I try not to correct people (unless they're English majors with horrible grammar), but I get really frustrated sometimes.

I've been getting better about not getting mad about it, but it still bothers me when people throw grammar out the window and then not care about it. Language is important, and people forget that all too often, in my opinion.

I agree. I'm an English major, but have only been so for a few months. I used to live with an English Education major, though, and her grammar was terrible so I was constantly correcting her on principle. She said that proper English doesn't matter outside of the classroom, so I always wondered why she wanted to teach it. (I think, though, if it matters in the classroom, it matters everywhere.)

hola,

would you mind if i used this picture for a facebook group.

it'd be fitting, considering the fact that it's a group for grammar lovers.

I have noticed that none of your sentences begin with capitalized letters. You have also ended a question with a period, rather than a question mark. This irks me.

Are you truly worthy to head such a group?

Nevertheless, it's fine by me, as long as you give credit where credit is due.

LilithNightwalker In reply to Fleurnoire [2006-08-13 15:58:07 +0000 UTC]

Well, if all English classes are like the ones at my school, then it seems that grammar does not have as much importance to the Education system as literature has. It seems they think we'll learn proper grammar by osmosis, through the books, or through the endless corrections they make on our papers.

Of course, I actually did learn proper grammar from books. It wasn't really osmosis, though.

I'm glad you like it.

LilithNightwalker In reply to knotbox [2006-07-12 01:47:27 +0000 UTC]

"For" is also a preposition. A preposition is any word used with (usually before) a noun or a pronoun and expresses how it is related to another element in the clause or sentence. "For" is a preposition because it expresses why you did something. Grammatically, the sentence would be correct as "for what reason did you do that" or "for what purpose did you do that". However, it would be best as "why did you do that", because it is grammatically correct and uses the least amount of words, unlike my response to your question.

knotbox In reply to LilithNightwalker [2006-07-13 19:35:06 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, now I can yell at people for ending their sentences with a preposition if I feel like it. Should be fun!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LilithNightwalker In reply to knotbox [2006-07-13 23:37:18 +0000 UTC]

Just for the record, it's also grammatically incorrect to end a clause with a preposition, too. A clause is a part of a sentence that can stand on its own... kind of like a mini sentence in a sentence. I don't know if that made any sense, but an incorrect example would be this: "I don't know where he came from, but I'm going to stop him." In that example, the word "from", a preposition, was used at the end of the first clause, "I don't know where he came from." It should be, "I don't know from where he came". That sounds weird, but only because we're so used to the incorrect form.
