Description the fake horns are lighter and guilt free but one needs to be very careful with them, all it takes is one good scrape against something like a doorjam and they will have to be repainted because paint does not bond to plastic so the color is more like a skin.

the real horns weigh twice as much (weight is comparable to like an apple) but are worry free vs the paint job on the fake horns. they are also the more desired shape and size. but there is also the controversy of using real animal parts.

I am still not sure which the customer will choose, considering they have a shirt that says "cows are friends not food" the use of real horns does unsettle them a bit, but at the same time the real horns are the more durable option and do look better...

(the purple in the eye is more subtle in person/without the flash btw)

seems like its gonna look pretty cool

but i wouldn't understand why some one would make a big deal out of real horns being used b.c as far as i know, at least with the dairy cows i was helping with, you could cut them off with out any harm to the animals and the cows themselves didn't really seem to care, they just don't care to be restrained just as they don't like being restrained when its time to clean up their hooves.

so far i like it the feet look cool XD

What if you made paper mache horns Then use a paper mache clay and put detail on it then paint and seal. That worked for me ^^ and my horns have been through so much xD

If they are going to be wearing that shirt than real horns would be inappropriate IMO.

To me, personally, I think making a costume out of real animal parts is wrong. To know that something had to suffer (or even die) in order to make art, even something like this. It's not too far from useing real fur in my opinion. It just doesn't seem right. And lets face it, if it came from the meat industry, the cow probably was in a lot of pain when the horns were removed.

I say use the fake ones. You're a smart costume maker and I know that there IS a way to make paint stick. There HAS to be. This is your chance to make a new discovery.

the horns get removed after the animal has passed on, they came from a steer from a smaller than typical cattle ranch where the animals were raised for meat and leather along with the horns (big cattle ranches remove the "bud" of the horn when young to keep the horns from growing because when working with so many cattle at once the horns are risky)
and there are regulations in place to make sure animals are not cruely cared for in their life time and that they do not suffer "when the time comes"

The animal died to be meat and leather and to have the horns sold to be made into gun powder horns, dog chew toys and buttons, i personally feel that being used in a costume is certainly more respectfull to the steer than his horns being a chew toy or ground down in to buttons...

(i am against fur for furs sake btw, if some one is going to kill just for the meat or ivory, or just to mount the hyde as a hunting trophy then that is not okay in my book. but killing for food and then using everything one can use from the animal is another matter)

I see. I suppose when you look at it with a "I'd rather use it, than be wasted" point of view it is somewhat an ecinomical decision. I suppose it comes to how the customer feels. Either way, I wouldn't want dead animal parts on my costume. But I understand where you're comming from.

Personally, I'd use the real horns. While the fake horns are more 'animal friendly' in a way, I think the real ones would just be better. I mean, they are gonna get discarded anyways...why not put em' to good use rather than toss em' out or grind them up for gelatin?

If the real horns came off a cow that was used to make food rather than murdered just for the horns or the horns just sawed off then NOT using them would in NO IMAGINABLE WAY be 'animal friendly'.

Just sayin'.

Whatever perils befell the previous owner of said horns, they're not using them anymore. It's like if your great grandma had a giant expensive diamond and instead of passing it on, you decide to destroy it (or something...)

the horns are a byproduct of the meat industry, i was told they came from a steer from a smaller than typicall ranch operation who raises them for meat and leather like every one else does, but they do not "debud" the cattle like most places do so they can sell the horns too. (removing the growth bud of the horn makes it not grow, which makes the cattle easier to handle and they do not hurt eachother)

Um, I know that. I'm just supporting that using the real horns would be ok...I mean, I know the cow/bull might have died wrongly or painfully but the horns are no longer being used...and so there's no point in wasting them. No need to flame...

With the painted ones couldnt you use a sealer to prevent the paint coming off?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LilleahWest In reply to RiiThePup [2010-08-17 04:28:44 +0000 UTC]

i sealed the snot outta them BUT its still like a skin over the base, plastic does not soak up paint, it sits on top of it, and so if it gets scraped the plastic will show.

That explains why so many people use resin sculpted versions. x.x Though I dunno how heavy those would be either.
