Description I was surprised to see these little thumbs. I always thaugt the squirrels have long thumbs for climbing up the trees. But they use them more for holding their food while eating. The thumbs of the feet are much longer and have long claws.

Ours eat sunseeds only if there's nothing other food like walnuts or hazelnuts   Sometimes they like raisins.

They eat two or three raisins, then they look for nuts But I think they like those sweet things.

Yes, it is quite amazing what squirrels manage to do even though they don't have opposable thumbs. One can't easily grasp things in one hand without such thumbs. Try doing things (such as opening a peanut) without using your thumbs and you can see how impressive squirrels are at that!

Man fragt sich wirklich, was sich Mutter Evolution dabei gedacht hat. Wofür kann es besser sein, nur solche Stummeldäumchen zu haben? Aber die Hörnchen gehen in der Tat sehr geschickt damit um.

Ha, well if you search online for "opposable thumbs" or "opposable thumb evolution" you'll find all sorts of people speculating on why humans and great apes are the only animals with opposable thumbs, and why that has been so important for their evolution. (For one thing, it allows them to grasp tools much more readily.) But you're right, squirrels seem to be quite good at what they need to do, even without those thumbs! I don't have any links, but I seem to recall some humorous websites suggesting that if squirrels only had opposable thumbs, they would take over the world!

Ah, das ist also der Grund, warum sie es bisher noch nicht getan haben!

I really am so envious of how close you can get to your fabulous squirrels.  I have to comfort myself with lots of sheep!!!

But they don't belong only to me I've to share them with lots of people who also want to feed them, and squirrels are very unfaithful when they get nuts!
I think sheep are more faithful, they only want a bit salt and some grass
