I read a book called Dragon Wings at school, and it was about a boy named Moon Shadow and his father Wind Rider living in America in the older times.

well the writers did do their research and that's probably why the Fire nation very very rarely has people with their hair down.

It's a traditional Manchurian haircut that was forced on to the Han by their Manchurian rulers as a way of shaming them and marking the Han as a conquered and subjugated people

This is not true,In ancient
Chinese people are influenced by Confucianism so If you cut your hair that mean You are a man of no filial piety,
if you Disloyal, unfilial, not righteousness you will have no face to meet anybody You're going to be in jail,
So this painting should be show about the late Qing Dynasty

I hope you're still around dA, because I have a question I can't seem to find an answer for (though I haven't looked in Chinese yet).
So some men, like people in general, have hair that naturally grows extremely long. This includes Chinese men. In fact, you see it a lot in the old Qing dynasty photos of the queues. How did men with hair that long wear their topknots with so much hair? Or did they just twist it all up and hide it under a hat?
Thanks!
