Description If you like this, you need to read this amazing short story by SonoUnPoeta , Woe-Be-Gone . I wish I could stuff copies of it into every copy of Deathly Hallows. It is AMAZING and will make you feel so good.

Finally people can tell Fred and George apart -- one stands a little higher than the other.

[ SPOILERS ]

Of all the deaths in Harry Potter, the one that feels the most senseless and unforgivable to me is Fred Weasley's. It didn't need to happen. Rowling was the hand of fate, and she chose to make it happen, and I feel like it was an abusive thing to do to readers. If you don't feel the same way, that's alright, but I don't want to hear about it here.

I know the Phelps twins had a hard time filming that scene, because they're best friends, and it wasn't hard to summon up grief at the idea of losing each other. Which made me imagine losing my sister Kit, who is the other half of my heart. I don't know who I'd be. I cry just thinking about it, not that I think about it often.

WHATEVER, anyway. You know it was just an elaborate Tom Sawyer-style practical joke, so Fred could see what people would say at his funeral. He'll show up while everybody's cryin' into their cake, throw his arm around George and be like, "MAN, you people are easy to fool!"

And everyone will have cake and be merry, The End.

P.S. If THIS makes all you chickens cry, I don't even know what to do with you. I'll still love you, though.

I think that it was an inspired bit of writing.  The wizards were at war, and in war there are sometimes senseless deaths, so having one of the twins die had a visceral effect on everyone.  At least she didn't go with her first idea and kill off Arthur Weasley: killing off another of Harry's father figures would have probably broken 'The Chosen One'.

I was watching the Deathly Hallows Part Two last night and saw George and the family weeping over Fred.  I haven't watched it for a while, so I just began to cry hysterically when I saw a very shocked Harry staring at them.

And when I saw Tonks and Lupin dead, I sobbed even harder, and my dad who was watching it with me was like, "Give it a rest."

You can flip your dad the old Double Eagle for me, okay. Fuck that noise. You fucking cry over Fred and Tonks and Lupin all you want to. If you're a fan of any character and you don't shed a tear for them when they die, you are made of fucking ice. You got a good, soft heart. Don't let anybody tell you not to cry.

I think you're right about Fred faking his death, though.  Seems like the type of prank he would pull.

Still, I cried.

I'm pretty sure that Mrs Weasley would try to scold Fred, then go down in a flood of tears and pepper his face with kisses.

Then Mr Weasley would strangle him in a hug, and his other brothers, and then Ginny would tiptoe and peck him on the cheek.

OH GOD, THIS IS ALMOST AS BAD AS THE TIME I FOUND A PIECE OF ART FOR THE MARAUDERS IN THE AFTERLIFE THAT SAID "MESSR. PRONGS AND MESSR. MOONY WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME MESSR. MOONY... HOME."
/grosssobbing.

(...I just have a lot of feelings, gaiz. ;__; )

I completely agree, by the by, on the topic of Fred's death. Honestly, it just came sort of... out of left field. George had already lost his ear, which I felt had been powerful for those two to go through (having always been known for their identicality and using it to their advantage). So I felt that killing Fred off was just sort of... a redundancy.

I can't blame Rowling, though. She had to get rid of SOMEONE in Harry's inner-circle, or there would have been a lot of complaints about how she's too much of a pansy to kill off any of the Weasleys.

Honestly, reflecting back to DH, I think the better choice would have been Percy. It would have been twice as tragic (having finally redeemed himself only to be killed off), sent home a better message (can you imagine how guilty the twins would've felt for wasting all those years angry at him?), and ALL OF THIS without the 'what-the-hell' aspect.

The scene where Fred died was also really hard and a bit too real for me because I have a twin sister. I know I'd be a mess without her so I could really simpathize with George during that time.

I agree. Killing Fred was just completely unnecessary and I will always be upset about it! I feel like Rowling was almost abusing her power as an author. I was sad with every character that died in the series but Fred especially and I like to think that yes, it is just a joke!

Love this!

I firmly believe your ending is canon. CANON.
F*ck Rowling's cruel blow to the epitomy of red-headed awesomeness. I. BELIEVE. YOU.

Golly I bawled like an idiot the first time I read the book. And I did nothing but blubber into my butterbeer at the movie.

But now you've shown me 'twas all null-in-void TWINS FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!

I love how simple this picture is but it speaks volumes.

I know there are reasons why, but I do feel like the way JKR killed characters was not right.

**SPOILERS - as if this picture wasn't one already?**

From Sirius to Hedwig, and especially Lupin, Tonks, Fred, and all the other poor fuckers who ate it in the last book, their deaths were not treated properly. I'm not saying they shouldn't have died, but she did not give enough care to their deaths. The only death I feel was treated well was Dumbledore's because I knew there was more to it and it made me speculate on Dumbledore's wheelings and dealings involving his own death.

I don't know if you're into Star Wars, but they have a pretty long series called the New Jedi Order in which a few major characters die - but when they die it is GLORIOUS. Their deaths feel like they mean something, feel like they went out with a bang or for some kind of purpose. I feel like that's the only proper way to kill off beloved characters.

sutoribenda [2011-09-04 15:11:22 +0000 UTC]

Killing Fred was pretty pointless. I understand why JK wanted Tonks and Lupin to die, that made sense. It was still really sad, but it made sense. The only reason I can fathom for her killing Fred is that she felt like one of the Weasleys needed to die and none of the other children would have made as much of an emotional impact on the readers.

I agree that it was pointless but I think that that was the... well, point. In war like that, people that shouldn't have died die. Families are torn apart, siblings are separated, etc. etc. Killing Fred showed that 'hey, all of this is dumb and pointless but it's still happening'. That's the way I see it anyway.

Something tells me George would soldier up. Because he'd know Fred would kick his butt if he didn't continue to bring mischief and mayhem and joy to others in that way. Although, if I were George and I didn't immediately walk into the sea, I'd probably take on a subtle split-personality.

GoGo-T-W In reply to lily-fox [2011-08-18 20:49:58 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't be surprised at all if some post traumatic stress disorder led to a split personality. Which begs the questions, do wizards have therapists?
