I work at a local coffeeshop/gallery, and we're doing a project for February where 50 artists will each do up a 5"x5" canvas. The canvases will sell for $25 each, and all the proceeds will go to the American Heart Association. We chose this charity because heart disease is the number one cause of death in the state of Hawaii, so it's an important local cause.This is my entry. I was just looking around at different Buddhist mudras (hand positions), and learned about this one, mrit sanjivini, which is meant to increase the strength of your heart and lower blood pressure. In the event of heart attack or palpitations, this mudra is supposed to ease your heart and give you time to get to a hospital, in the same way an aspirin would help. (You place your index finger on the base of your thumb, touch thumb and center fingers together, and let your little finger be natural.) I thought, whatever one's beliefs, it was the perfect image for this charity project.
If it sounds like you guys are interested, I may put this up on eBay and see if I can raise more. Either way, this and a lot of other amazing canvases will be up at the 3rd Cup Cafe in Waipahu (on Oahu) through the month of February.

Also, is it weird that I tried out this hand position and it WORKED? I'm kind of a copy cat, in the sense that if I see something peaceful and spiritual such as this, I'm going to try and replicate it to see what happens. The ease of the hand position was surprising; you make it look complicated but it is indeed quite simple. Immediately I felt more calm and strong all at once. Then I read what it is supposed to do...

In the case that my hand is a little stupid and doesn't like that position, I guess I'll just go with the asprin. This is beautiful though and good luck with your project!

Ha ha, well... If you HAVE aspirin, I'd recommend taking it in the event of a heart attack, but if you remember to do the mudra on the way to the hospital, hey -- can't hurt!

You should! I think 50 canvases was a tad ambitious, but it's been a lot of fun. We've got pro artists and 8-year-olds doing them, too. Gonna be awesome!

I love this! The way you continued it on the sides of the canvas makes it look like an object I'd like to own, rather than a simple image. (Not that there's anything wrong with images, of course... ahh I don't know how to put this.)

I think the tiny touch of gold is perfect! And it's nicely indicative of Buddhism, how there's always a tiny bit of light no matter where you are.
