I can imagine her as the "wife" of an aristocrat who married her as soon as her family decided for her. She is young and curious about life and bound to a vow she had no choice in. She wants to escape but she is such a timid girl and her conscious stops her every time. Will her family have to give back the money? Would they be okay with out her "husband's" support?
