Description
I stared out of the window at the back of the classroom. The leaves had long since fallen to the ground and the temperature outside had turned cold. It hadn’t snowed yet, but I knew it would soon.
I instinctively reached toward my neck, but quickly realized that my millennium puzzle was no longer there. This was an idea that I still wasn’t used to even though Atem and the puzzle had been gone over a year now.
“I know you are still struggling, Yugi?” Téa suddenly said, startling me.
“Oh, Téa! I-I- I don’t know what you are talking about.” I quickly replied, stuttering a bit.
“Oh come on Yugi, I still it in your face every day. You get this longing look in your eyes and you reach for the millennium puzzle even though it isn’t there anymore. We all miss him, but Yugi you can’t cling to his memory forever.” Téa says while putting a hand on my shoulder and looks into my eyes.
I look away from her and out of the corner of my eye, I see someone outside. I turn to get a closer look, but then the person was gone. I scrunch my face in confusion, but dismiss the situation as Joey and Tristan burst into the classroom right as the teacher walks in. Joey plops into the chair next to me and sighs.
“Hard to believe we are graduating in just four months…” Joey whispers to me as the teacher began the lesson for the day. I simply nodded in agreement.
I almost immediately tuned out the lesson as I went back to staring out the window. I watched the trees gently sway in the wind and the sky began to darken as snow approached Domino City. Once again, I saw something in my peripheral vision. My eyes shifted to see a small figure near the school gates.
The figure looked feminine, however, it was hard to tell since the figure was wearing long robes. The robes looked to be of Egyptian origin and I could see the eye of Anubis on the robes. My breath caught in my throat and I abruptly stood up.
“Yugi Muto, what are you-” The teacher said, but I interrupted.
“Sorry, I am not feeling well. I am going home.” I said it so fast I’m sure it sounded like gibberish. I grabbed my belongings and sprinted out of the classroom. I could hear the protests of the teacher, Joey, Téa, and Tristan. I did not stop until I was outside of the school and in front of the gate.
The figure was nowhere to be seen. I sighed. I pushed open the school gates and ducked my head in disappointment. I decided to head back to the game shop to talk to Grandpa about what I saw. I knew that it was probably in my head, but he could possibly shed a new light on it.
When I got back to the shop, Grandpa was unboxing new decks of monster cards. Grandpa turned around and stared at me in confusion. “Yugi, this is unlike you. Is everything ok?” He asked.
I shook my head and began helping Grandpa unbox more cards. “I saw something today…..while at school” I began, but started to trail off as my thoughts wondered.
“What did you see, Yugi?” Grandpa asked after a moment of silence lingered between us.
“I’m not entirely sure. There was a figure outside, but when I went out there the person was gone.” I said, looking down slightly embarrassed.
“What did this person look like?” Grandpa asked.
“Well, I am not quite sure. The figure was wearing cloak-like robes and was small and feminine. The robes had the eye of Anubis on it.” I sounded much more confident by the time I got to my last sentence. I was so sure that I saw the eye of Anubis symbol on those robes. I was so sure of the figure now.
“Hmm, that is quite interesting, Yugi.” Grandpa put down the last of the new cards and began to pace. While pacing, Grandpa stroked his beard and thought aloud. “There was a prophecy about the return of the Pharaoh. However, this is not about Pharaoh Atem, but his younger sister, Kissa. I may have something that could help you, Yugi.”
“Grandpa, what are you saying?” I asked.
“What I am saying is that you may not have been seeing things this morning,” Grandpa said and walked out of the shop and into the family apartment. Moments later he returned with an old leather-bound book.
“This book contains a photo of a long-lost text that I had found during one of my archaeological expeditions with Professor Hawkins. It isn’t the best quality, but I should be able to read most of it. If I were you, though, I would reach out to Isis and Marik Ishtar to see if they know anything about this.” Grandpa says while he squints at the picture in order to read the small text.
After a moment, Grandpa began reading me the text. “It says that the sister of the pharaoh, a pharaoh herself, shall descend upon the Earth again after the true pharaoh moves into the afterlife. She shall save the vessel from the ring and all shall be right with the realm again.”
Grandpa closed the book and looked at me. I was at a loss for words. I abruptly stood up and walked into the family apartment. I bypassed my mother, who was ironing my father’s work clothes and went straight up to my room. I flopped down onto my bed, landing on my back, and looked up at the ceiling.
“Oh Atem, I wished that the figure in robes was you,” I whispered out loud to myself.
“He is much closer than you think, Yugi Muto.” A voice spoke from across the room.
I sprang out of bed and came face to face with a complete stranger. The stranger removed the hood that was covering their face, and I gasped. I came face to face with Atem except it wasn’t him at all. This stranger had the same fierce purple eyes he did, but they were more feminine and cat-eye shaped. Long hair had cascaded from the hood and I immediately noticed the uncanny similarities between mine and Pharaoh Atem’s hair.
“Who are you? Why are you following me?” I asked.
“Why Yugi you already know who I am; but if you must know. I am Pharaoh Kissa, Pharaoh Atem’s twin sister. I have been released from deep inside the millennium puzzle by Anubis to put an end to the spirit inside of the millennium ring.” Pharaoh Kissa said, while pulling out the millennium puzzle and handed it to me.
I stared at her in disbelief. All of the millennium items had long since been buried at the Shrine of the Millenium Stone. “How did you get this?” I quietly ask, tightly holding the puzzle to my chest.
“The Kaiba Corporation has begun digging up the shrine ruins in the hope of reviving Atem. Seto has the selfish reasoning of wanting to defeat Atem once and for all. He planned to excavate the whole shrine in order to find the puzzle, put the puzzle back together, and begin Atem back. However, all of this chaos released me from my five thousand year slumber and with the help of Ishtar family the puzzle was recovered before Seto would find it.”
I sat down on the edge of my bed and marveled the way the puzzle dazzled in the sunlight. I had missed the weight of the puzzle around my neck. As I lowered the puzzle to its previous place around my neck, I noticed that the puzzle felt much lighter than before.
“It’s because the puzzle no longer harbors any souls within it.” Pharaoh Kissa said to me as if she had read my mind.
“Why are you here though?” I asked her.
“Yugi, did you not pay attention to the prophecy? I swear you and Atem are exactly the same. The real reason I awoke from my slumber was because of the spirit that lives inside of the millennium ring has become active again. I believe you refer to him as Yami Bakura? Well he lives and as the prophecy goes; he will come after you to make sure that Atem has no vessel to return to. With no one to stop him, he can take over this world as his own. Priestess Isis foresaw this happening and locked my soul away inside of the millennium puzzle after my brother locked his own soul inside of the puzzle.” Pharaoh Kissa said, beginning sarcastically and then she fell into a more serious tone.
I nodded my head, remembering what my grandpa had just told me not even an hour earlier. I stood up from my bed and walked across the room to Pharaoh Kissa. I stared into her purple eyes searching for the truth and after a moment I sighed.
“Atem would be disappointed in me if I didn’t help you; which reminds me. What did you mean when you said that he is a lot closer to me than I think?” I said at last.
“Yugi, Atem may not be physically by your side, but he still lives on in your heart. You two shared a body for a long time, which means you shared a heart and he still lives on through that. You can’t hear him, but he is there.” Pharaoh Kissa said, placing a hand on my shoulder. She then walked past me and then suddenly vanished.
I was left surprised by the truth of her words. However, I was then left with a new wound in my heart as this aching feeling of abandonment was rekindled by Pharaoh Kissa’s words.
