Description "De Beuk erin" / "Keep my nose to the grindstone"

"D21"
Watercolor
29,7/42 cm

Megaliths have always fascinated me. We have a few of those ancient neolitic stones in Wéry (BE)  en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W%C3%A9r…
but Drenthe (NL) had so much more of them to offer...
This is a watercolor of Hunebed D21, made in Drenthe as well, during the Easter holidays, two years ago.

The area round Borger must have been the ideal place to settle down, for the people of the funnelbeaker culture. Within an area of 5 km we found 11 so called "Hunebedden" the Dutch name for "Dolmen".
Hunebed D21 is a portal grave. It's one out of five dolmen located at a place called Bronneger, north of Borger, in the province of Drenthe. From those five, D21 is the most important one, because of the archaeological finds.
He's also fascinating because of the impressive beech which took over the function of a missing supporting stone and dominates the scenery around the stones.

D21 has been investigated by Dr. Van Giffen, who discovered that the floor excisted out of several layers. In each layer he found artefacts. Over 600 pieces of pottery have been digged up. And approximately one meter under the ground, the researcher also discovered the missing supporting stone and placed it back where we still can find it nowadays.
