Description This is a collection of pen sketches I have done to prep for my sculpture, Garuda , that is underway. I think I am going to start posting a lot more of everything (sketches, WIPS, etc.) either here, or on my blog, to just get myself out there.

Self critique time! Apparently I like drawing in profile, just heads, and all of them pointing to the left. That's a pretty funny trait actually.

Anyways, I want to let everyone know that I am posting WIP shots of the sculpture (along with other things you don't see here on DA) as I make progress on it on my Blog , so check it out!

Thanks for looking and enjoy!

I've got the same issue with drawing anything, always pointing to the left.
It's because my hand naturally flows that way and its easier to flick the pen left to right for all those nifty details and avoids smudging anyhting with my palm.
It takes practice to get things facing the other way but ti still feels unattural, ike if you cross your legs and then try to cross them the opposide way.

Yep! I assumed it came down to writing habits, and your description details it a lot better. Still doesn't explain why I only like to draw heads.

though the entire body of anyhting is usually interesting, we're always drawn to faces of creatures. They're usually the most expressive (even with animals theres usually ears, eyes and mouth to change their expression) and I find the shape of even the weirdest imaginary creature follows these rules (unless theyre non expressive creepy ones)
I also agree its to do with writing. Alot of my friends who learnt chinese as their first language draw in the opposite direction. Though theres always deviations from this rule (especially depending on if your elft or right handed)
Also when drawing a head, starting with the muzzle/mouth on a creature with a more narrowed head (rather than a flat faced creature like a person or parrot where I usually start with the eyes) its the left most point o f the creature and the head usually gets wider near the end of the skul forming an arrow facing left <
this gives a strong sense of direction and it's shown only humans and domesticated dogs are able to understand the gesture of a pointing hand and how it implies movement, direction and order which generally makes us feel safe and that we have a plan. (Alot of directors of design, most prominitely in games or artwork use this feature to subconsiously direct the player to a certain viewpoint that draws out attention with the angle of the scenery without us knowing)
theres alot of psychology with this stuff. its rather interesting but pointless unless you want to use these to your advantage in art or design lol
sorry for the rant xD

This is funny, because I also have a habit of making all my heads face left whenever I can get away with it..

I figure it has to do with writing from left to right, because I will start with the mouth and work towards the body as I draw. I wonder if I grew up writing from top to bottom or some other orientation if it would end up different.

I love these pen sketch things you put up. I am trying to work up the confidence to draw from memory/imagination with pen like I use to. These are just great!

Admittedly I did use reference while sketching some of these guys, so don't get too enthralled.

well, ^.^;; alright, but still! Your skill has grown so much since I first started watching you! With or without a reference this is all still very impressive.

Well using reference certainly isn't a bad thing, the greatest artists out there use reference. Sorry if I made it out to be that way.

nah ^.^ I agree with you. It's how I do my kittens most of the time. And, well, just about everything else ^.^;; I just have a good bit of respect for your hard work. It shows a great deal in even the sketches you submit here. It's also encouraging that yo use references. There is still hope for me ^.^!
