Now BarUgon should not be confused with BarAgon; they're two totally different monsters. For example, Barugon is a brown, four-legged lizardy-thing with a horn on its head. While Baragon is a brown, four-legged lizardy-thing with a horn on its head. Hope I cleared that up.

Here we go, Gamera Month is coming to a close. The penultimate sprite in the list is Gamera's first opponent; the monster Barugon - the ice breathing, rainbow death lizard. Barugon is basically like Gamera's Anguirus - in that he was his first opponent, but has for some reason fallen to the wayside by being obscured by the Ghidorah equivalent; Gyaos.
Barugon is a pretty unique creature in any regard. For the one thing, it hatches from an egg that everyone believed to be a valuable opal. The creature also apparently has an affinity for gems; almost like a medieval dragon. As the perfect counter for Gamera's fire-based ability, Gamera has the ability to spray a mist of freezing cold ice from his tongue. And of course, he has one of the most ridiculous weapons ever; a Rainbow that he shoots from his back...
Truth be told, until you get to Legion in the Heisei series, Barugon's rainbow is probably the closest thing to Godzilla's atomic heat ray. The only problem is, it has to travel in an arch instead of being a more direct shot.

Ultimately, once I was done with Gyaos, I knew Barugon was the next logical step. He was the second of the sprites I made, and by god I knew EXACTLY how to do it. I love most everything about this sprite; from the customized legs and back, to the spikes along the back. But what I love most is the head; much like Jiger, I knew exactly what had to be done and with a little texture editing, I got it very good-looking. The only thing I'm not ultimately crazy about was the eye. This was made partially between the transition period of whether or not I would try to emulate the Showa appearance or give it a Heisei update. The eye exists somewhere in between.

Keep your eyes peeled, Gamera Month ends tonight...(and that sucks because it just got started too.)
