Additional story:

From inside a tent one couldn’t truly see the morning, but Cyrus was certain one could absolutely feel it. He stretched and yawned, excited to get out and about. It was to be an interesting day for sure, as he had heard from other travelers tails of a wondrous ice cave, holding many secrets and treasures to behold. It had taken a moment to coax Hal into it, but after a while the serious man had grunted Cyrus to be insufferable, and agreed to take the trip. Always so dutiful and serious, that Hal. Cyrus had half a grin as he sprung up and tugged his pants on, trying to find the rest of his clothing. The tent was sometimes a bit of a mess, but a great thing about getting up early was that no one would usually get to see it.

A smile stretched upon Cyrus’ face as he peeked outside, just to be greeted with a lovely spring sun. It was that sweet, perfect time of the year when the sun truly started to have a warming effect, and everything was slowly coming back to life after the winter. What was left of snow was sparkling, and even a few birds sweetened the air with their singing. An awesome day, for sure.

“Awake at last”, Hal remarked as Cyrus made his way to the center of their camp, leaving the darker man surprised.“If I had known you were up already, I would have gotten up earlier. Still not a psychic you know, but working on it”, Cyrus replied, helping himself to some breakfast. Hal muttered, and what Cyrus could make out of it, was that the brunette enjoyed quiet time in the mornings. Cyrus couldn’t help but grin and nudge Hal with his elbow gently.

After the breakfast Cyrus put down his plate and asked: “So, who do you think we should take to the cave?”“I had thought Eloise and Madge. Those two won’t create a fuss, and since it’s a new location, we want to be safe”, Hal replied with a slight frown.“Great! I’ll go fetch them!” Cyrus agreed, before he’d have to hear another lecture. It wasn’t like they hadn’t been caving before, but for some reason Hal always wanted to make sure. And then make sure on that. Yawn.

Madge was easy enough to find, and the sweet female wagged her tail as Cyrus greeted her with good morning wishes, telling her they were off to caving and she would be coming, too. The pale female was agreeable as always, and Cyrus guided her towards Hal for tacking up while he continued the search for Eloise. The roan female wasn’t quite as gentle, but instead more of a regal stature, not really minding anyone else’s business. It had taken a while to get her truly ingrained into the pack, but all was now good. He was met with a slightly absent gaze, which soon came more into focus as he presented a bridle, and the opportunity to go caving.

Cyrus really enjoyed bringing originally wild Tokotas into these trips, as they were so natural in the environment, and usually seemed to enjoy it themselves. There was something just an extra bit special about riding a tamed one – their muscles and way of going had developed in the hard terrains, tending to themselves. You could always trust a wild Tokota to know when a storm was about to hit, or be the first to smell a bear from miles away. They were an exciting combination of danger and peace of mind. Just marvelous creatures.

Once both Tokotas were rounded in, it didn’t take long to pack up some backpacks with all essential equipment and tack up the two females. Both men swung themselves onto the saddles with ease that came from tons of hours spent on the backs of the great beasts. They didn’t really gather the reins, as they were there to mostly gently guide, not jerk their faces around. The Tokotas started off with a quiet, relaxed walk, eager to go, but not rushing too much.“It’s a bit of a ride, but not too bad”, Hal pointed out, scoping the surroundings with his ever so serious gaze: “If it looks too melted, we won’t go in. Promise me you won’t rush in, before I’ve inspected it.”“Yes, dad”, Cyrus replied, his tongue just a bit faster than the teeth wanting to bite it. Ah, well, it was nothing Hal wasn’t used to.

After a mile or so, they continued in a jog, and were soon enough flying across the tundra more towards the mountains. Cyrus had a very wide grin cast on his face, and even Hal failed to look so funereal. Before reaching their expected destination they slowed down and let their quickened breaths normalize again.

The opening to the ice cave was not grand, in fact it was easy to miss and took the men a good while to even find. They were very happy they had chosen to do this trip while there was plenty of sunlight left, as the mission would have probably proven impossible otherwise.
“Ha! Here!” Cyrus cheered once he finally happened upon an icy crack on the mountainside, which upon further inspection turned out to be just wide enough for Tokotas to pass, and widened even further beyond the opening. Hal hushed him in fear of an avalanche, and for once Cyrus shut his mouth, excited to actually see the cave.

Hal got down from Madge’s back for a moment, running his hands across the icy walls, his eyes alert and looking for any worrying cracks or leaks. When he found none, he mounted back up and nodded to Cyrus. Once they truly got past the opening, they fell quiet for a whole another reason; the cave was magnificent. It was almost entirely that ethereal, deep shade of blue glaciers had, with thousands of icicles hanging from the ceiling. Ice had formed all sorts of beautiful things to marvel at, starting from heavy pillars ranging all the way from bottom to ceiling, and different sort of forms sculpted by nature itself. It was easy to believe the cave was not quite from this world, so unreal it looked.

After just staring for a short moment, the men continued in silence, only broken by Hal quietly telling Cyrus to watch out for any falling icicles. Those could do real damage, no matter how pretty they looked. At first it was easy going, as the cave was tall and wide, but soon they were forced to form a line instead of continuing side by side. Cyrus went ahead, leaning onto Eloise’s neck to squeeze through a much smaller opening, soon followed by Hal and Madge. The cave continued, and once they stopped again, it was very easy to loose direction. At moments like these it was very calming to have Tokotas, as their keen senses could surely tell which direction the fresh air was coming, and where they had already visited. Since the two females did not seem too alerted, they continued further into the tunnels, increasingly excited to find something – anything, pretty much, as the cave was quite the find in itself.

This looks so cool, I live the background. ^^ And the story is great.
On the HP count though, the bonus only counts for the tokota the companion is applied to so it would be 1 for Madge and 2 for Eloise.

I'm glad you like it

And oh, okay, I'll fix that, then. I must have been a bit careless reading the journal.
