Another great drawing by DimMartin, this time of the primary planes that make of the Atlantean League. The League of Atlantis is a sea-borne nation that controls the oceans between the continents of Keros (where much of the story takes place) and Traebe. The airgroup above represents a common combat group the League of Atlantis deploys in order to defend their oceans from both aerial and ocean-based threats. Also, being they are the only nation that is heavily reliant on oceans, most of their planes are capable of landing in water with the limited dry landing places reserved for the diminutive Buffalo fighters.

Two Catalinas and one F6F Hellcat, not a Brewster Buffalo.  The Buffalos Wright Cyclone engine did well in the Finnish cold, rather than how it stood up against the Japanese in the hot air over Indonesia.  The Martin looks bigger than it should.  Love the idea of wire-guided missiles on seaplanes.

They might be finish because the fins used the Buffalos to great success against the soviets, so much so that the highest kill ratio in the second world war was for the buffalo.

The soviets had garbage for fighters when they fought the fins.

Flying airship/battleship! My world has a mix of fantasy (airships, magic) and technology (of the WW2 level). Hence why you see these Catalina's firing 'aerial' torpedoes at some off-screen target ^^

The major problem with the Buffalo, from the sources I have read, is that with each successive model, the plane got heavier, which reduced performance. The Finns received the first batch, which were the lightest, lacking self sealing fuel tanks and pilot protection. As these and other additions were made to the later batches, which the British used, the plane no longer had what little advantages it might have had vis a vis the Zero. This is why the Buffalo was replaced by the Wildcat, which had lost the initial procurement battle, but had shown so much potential, that when rebuilt, it was produced in such large numbers.

Even so, the main reason that the British had trouble with the Zero is that nobody at that time knew just how maneuverable that plane was. From the scene above, it looks like the Buffalo is perfect for the job, considering what the enemy aerial craft looks like.

Indeed, though in my story these guys get the Buffalo because their country isn't as strong as others (these guys will be fighting BF-109s and FW190s). But their Sea Plane fleet is second to none ^^

Really well-done, and well-imagined on your part, but why did you name the Atlantean fighter after one of the worst fighter planes in British history? The Buffaloes were so big and cumbersome and so poorly equipped that they got torn to shreds in WW2. That fighter above looks nothing like something so useless as that.

Lionel23 In reply to kildeez [2012-02-17 03:21:49 +0000 UTC]

Heh, thanks; this comment made me chuckle a bit. ^^

I picked the plane as being this world is a bit fantasy, the Buffalo isn't THAT bad, and I believe the Fins made very good use of them and were the only Buffalo aces in World War 2. Also, the Wildcat is being used by a different country and if you check my 'City of Atlantis' deviation, I explain that because space is so limited the League has to use the smaller Buffalo over the bigger Wildcats (space consideration). The buffalo is a pretty small, diminutive fighter!

Lionel23 In reply to kildeez [2012-02-17 06:02:57 +0000 UTC]

Well the Brewster Buffalo did underperform in the pacific and was quickly phased out, but that was mainly pilots were uncomfortable with it. Wildcats were easier to handle against those Zero aces ^^

Ah, right. I read that the Zeros flew circles around the Buffaloes. One general I read about even said they practically handed air superiority over Southeast Asia over to the invading Japanese. And that's my WW2 nerd coming out

AzabacheSilver In reply to kildeez [2013-11-05 02:01:17 +0000 UTC]

Actually the Buffalo's performance was degraded once the U.S. Navy decided it had to have more armor on it.  The Finnish Buffaloes were of the export version which was lighter and more agile.  They were deadly to the Polikarpov I-15's and I-17's they fought in World War II.  British Buffaloes were of the same model, however poor organization of air defenses in Singapore meant British Buffaloes were only allowed to attack when the enemy was sighted in the skies.  So British Buffaloes were only in the air when British Air Defense sighted Japanese bombers.  The Japanese would have a fighter screen to pounce on the Buffaloes from above the bombers, so poor British battle tactics were much to blame for their defeat.

Also Dutch Buffaloes in Sumatra used the same poor organization, but they had a wider area to defend and were able to get into the air earlier to engage the Japanese at higher altitude.  They got more kills than the British did, but most of the planes where destroyed by the waves of Japanese fighters that badly outnumbered them.  The Dutch got into what ever bombers and transports they had left and fled to Australia.

Also in the Battle of Coral Sea, American Naval Buffaloes had more success as they caught Japanese Pilots by surprise when the American Forces jumped an unwary and overconfident Japanese fleet.  However in Midway, Japanese Pilots learned from their mistakes and downed the lumbering over armored Buffaloes in that battle.

In short, there were much worse planes than the Buffalo in World War II, but they only saw like the P-40 Warhawk, success in only a few theaters early in World War II.

GOOD GOD!  That was over a year and a half ago!

Did you spend the last 18 months just researching this comment!?  If so, I'm flattered!

Also, I never said there were worst planes than the Buffalo.  I'm just saying, as far as WWII fighters go, we're not exactly talking about the best of the best.  Pretty lousy, actually.  At least the P40 could hold its own in a dogfight (mostly by charging headlong in and relying on its armor to sponge up the bullets, but unlike the Buffalo, it had the firepower to get crap done).

AzabacheSilver In reply to kildeez [2013-11-05 03:51:15 +0000 UTC]

No, it was what I knew about the Buffalo off hand.  I am a big fan of the aircraft of World War II.  As far as the Buffalo versus the P40, the Buffalo was actually fielded by the British, the Warhawk was regulated to Australian, South African, and New Zealand Units serving in Africa as the British felt it was unsuitable as a fighter plane.  It was disliked by it's crews as the average ME 109 F Model could best it, but it had some success against Italian Aircraft in Somalia and Ethiopia, where MOST people don't know Japan and Italy were trying to make a Pacific Base to link up Japanese Forces with the European Axis Forces.
The Italian Forces in Somalia did the fighting, the Japanese supplied them with Oil and Gas.  And the German cared less.  However some argue if the Italians had won in Ethiopia against British Colonial Forces, it could have changed the entire course of the war.  But very little records were kept by either side, so much of this is speculation.

East African Campaign
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Afr…

Japanese actions in Africa (in dispute)
"In addition, some might consider that an "East African Theatre", should include Battle of Madagascar , even though that was planned in London and initially involved only UK land forces on route to India. It was also unique in that involved the only Japanese forces to see action outside of Asia and the Pacific. While Madagascar later fell under the jurisdiction of the East Africa Command, the campaign did not relate to countering the stratetgic imperatives of Italy/Germany, so much as those of Japan."

Huh.  I didn't know the Somali theatre was that important (besides being the only time the Italians defeated Allied forces without outside assistance).
