Description It was suggested in one of my interviews in Ottawa that I create a lipsynch animation for a demo reel.

So I did. Took me the WEEK to do this. Hardest part was to find a skit that was not too long but had enough emotion that it was interesting to both animate and watch.

Good part is, I never got tired of the audio.. not when each time I would watch my timing I'd see a little more of the characters become alive.

It was all done in TVpaint.

Not sure if it was something the actress added or if it was part of the script but it made for a perfect animated skit

And yes.. Tom's got Balls of Steel... just dating a Klingon girl should give him major street cred

Without looking I beleive it's the one where different part of the ship are in different time periods.. But I have seen every ep at least once and kept some of the best for personnal enjoyment ^^

Constructive criticism? Just do more... I could watch this all day. You just can't get that depth of expression out of humans acting on the screen. (Yes, I know that she's half-Klingon; cut me some slack.)

Oh, I like Voyager plenty... I haven't seen all the episodes but want to do that.

And my most elaborate fan fiction (related to Star Trek) is set in the Voyage series. But don't hold your breath waiting for me to publish it. Feh, it will probably never get published; I just replay it in my mind from time to time.

I never did comment on this Rich, so I apologize:

I really like the interaction between the two characters here. Especially with Be'lanna's reaction to Tom calling her "hostile". Her frustration was more believable here than the real source you drew from (saw it on YouTube, I like yours better than the original scene).

Quick question on TVPaint: Is it pixel based or vector based? Thought I asked. Again, this is awesome work here Rich!

Another quick question: Did you teach yourself to animate? Or did you go to a school to learn how to animate?

Thanks man I thought it worked best to pick a skit from a live action show and then toonify it than trying to 're-toon' from a cartoon show. I have a few other skits left and right I can animate too.

Now for TV paint, as far as I know, it's pixel-based. But it's also layer-based. I liked the fact that I could have a 'light' line instead of a 'thin' line (like flash and Toonboom do.. thin or thick, it's still a 100% opaque line.. tv paint allows to draw lightly)

And as for learning, I went to a school to animate.. but they didnt teach me much if anything.. I'm basically self-taught.
However I get tips from anywhere I can

The lipsync is great and the characters are very well made. It's really fun to watch and you got the characters so well...
And btw, I loved Star Trek Voyager: it's great to see those two after all these years.

characters are not really clean OR colored but the goal was to get the acting and lipsynch done and visible.
I don't remember how the idea to pick a skit from Voyager came about but I know I started looking at some 'whose line is it' and realized the canned laughs were not helping the timing one bit.

Still, I will animate some other things soon too ^^

That's good to know.
I saw that you did a little test with Flash: it is good.
I hope you're going to do more animations: really inspiring works.

And you're not alone, btw. That program (Flash) hates pretty much everybody. Also, last week, I tried to animate something with another software named "Pencil Animation". After 30-40 min of work, it just crashed and I lost every frame I did. So, I feel your pain.

The flash thing was short, but it was to see how if I still could do it.. which apparently would be the case.

And I think I did try the program you used.. it didnt crash on me but it didnt work well with my tablet device.. nothing was proportional.

I'm glad I could find TVpaint too ^^
