Andy Panda, created by Walter Lantz, made his first appearance in 1939 in a short entitled "Life begins for Andy Panda". It was actually a parody of an Andy Hardy movie. He started out as a cute baby panda - who can resist? But like Mickey Mouse, as he became more popular he became more blah. Blah or not, in the mid and later '40s three Andy Panda cartoons were nominated for Academy awards. In the post war era animated cartoons did not "qualify" for Oscars. Remember the outcry when Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" was snubbed for Best Picture?Related content

I watched "The Painter and the Pointer" yesterday and it just did not work for me. Supposedly that was the only time they used that personality for Andy.

Andy Panda was around when I was a kid, 60 years ago? Never was as popular as a Warner character, but still his cartoons were on from time to time.

I live in New Rochelle, NY, the birthplace of Walter Lantz. Mighty Mouse was born here as well, in the Kaufman Building, a few blocks from me, where Terrytoons had its studio.
