her tail anatomy is similar to that of a whales, her spine extends to about halfway down her tail, but it is mostly just muscle. no human leg bones underneath or anything like that. Sometimes I want to draw an anatomical mermaid, the skeletal and muscular structure, just for fun. XD

The first thing I see is the odd anatomy of the tail and I don't understand how is she sitting (looks like she's sitting on her tail in a very uncomfortable way). All the stuff and the skulls does look a bit unnecessary for me. The moon is too big and the clouds looks like a flat wall with a hole for the moon. Actually the older one (if I did understood it correctly and it was the older one) looked pretty good! The tail looked nice and the island and the background looked better too...

I do not think the anatomy of the tail is odd, however I was not able to achieve the depth I was going for in her pelvic region. I got a little too much of a curve in the crotch area, and couldn't quite get it to recede like i wanted, making it look like shes sitting on her tail - it was originally drawn to have that area a little farther back so her hips would be more settled on a rock behind her, rather than straight above the tail. the darker layers i put on didnt want to stick, so rather than risking lifting the color from below, I simply left it as is.
also I do not think the moon is (compositionally) too big. bigger than reality, sure, but this is not a realistic painting. the entire painting is rather flat, not just the clouds. the entire thing looks as if each piece was painted separatly and then cut and pasted on top of the other parts, that is intentional, i do not often strive for great visual depth.
unfortunately i think we simply disagree. The older one had severe anatomy issues, the sky was nothing but a load of useless negative space, and I did not accomplish what I wanted because I was too afraid to add more detail. I enjoy a lot of detail, and elements that relate to the subject. She sinks ships, and drowns men, luring them in by appearing like a woman. the water and sky are not just empty planes void of effort, and the skulls are indicative of her success rate.
I respect that you simply may prefer the older one, and that you might not like a lot of excessive detail, and yes, it is excessive, but that is what I was going for. I feel like i accomplished far more with this painting than the old one, for things like anatomy, lighting, stylization, attention to detail, as well as mood coloring. one of the things that always bothered me about the old one was that she was strangely thin and bony for how many victims she had (I imagine she eats them)
anyways I appreciate your comment and your input, but I suppose we just disagree.

Yes, suppose we do. But it's nice to know your opinion about the things I pointed out.
I would almost like to list more things I like about the older work, but there's probably no point to do that. I just say that the only issues for me in that piece was her right hand, the paleness of the rocks and the topsurface skulls.
As for the thinness of her, I think that skinny creatures just looks much more evil than those with more generous shape. And maybe it's only natural to stay thin when you eat just some malnourished sailors every now and then...

that was the original intention, but for some reason it didnt work for me once finished (the thinness)I think perhaps if i had been able to get her bone structure proper it might have turned out better for me.
I wonder, do you prefer the green quality of the old one? I rather like it, but I wanted to achive a night time effect in the new one, and a dark sort of mood. I am fairly partial to the green water in the original, but it just didnt seem to fit with the new one so i didnt put it in.

I really do like the green tone, it looks quite fresh (the tones of the newer version looks too washed out for my liking). The color scale and the whole view looks calm and cold but there's enough green color to give the kind of poisonous feeling which I like. It's also nice that there's a hint of warm yellow in the skin and in the tail, but the two skulls looks too yellow for me.
The overall watercolor-feel is also something I like.

yeah I always thought mermaids with legs under their tail skin looked bazaar- what fishy creature had legs under its tail? I totally have the skeleton mapped out in my head when I draw imaginary things, because if it doesn't make sense it bugs the crap outa me.
