I must have passed out again because I woke up on a bed in a grotty motel room. A black leather jacket was wrapped around my shivering body. It was far too big for me but I pulled it tightly around me. It wasn’t cold but I couldn’t stop shaking.

Then Detective Bryant appeared from the bathroom.

“Hey TJ! How are you feeling?” she said softly as she sat down next to me and gently stroked my face.

I didn’t respond, I wasn’t ready to speak yet, I had thought myself invincible, but what happened to me, broke me. I just cried as she scooped me up in her strong arms and comforted me.

“We’ll be safe here tonight, Baby. But they’ll be looking for us. So tomorrow you and I are going away for a little bit. I’ve got somewhere safe I can take you, but I promise I’ll be there to protect you.”

She spoke softly but didn’t sugar coat it. Danger was stalking us and I needed to be ready for it. Young Tea Jones died that night on a hard wooden table in a dark room, but Detective Bryant would rebuild me as someone new.
