One of the best men, ever lived! Voltaire!
Inveigled by a spy named Beauregard into a real or burlesque confession he was sent to the Bastille on May 16, 1717, here he recast Oedipe, began the Henriade and decided to change his name.

Ever after his exit from the Bastille in April 1718 he was known as Arouet de Voltaire, or simply Voltaire, though legally he never abandoned his patronymic.
Right one Belle et Bonne.
A solid gain to his happiness was the adoption, or practical adoption, in 1776 of Reine Philiberte de Varicourt, a young girl of noble but poor family, whom Voltaire rescued from the convent, installed in his house as an adopted daughter, and married to the marquis de Villette. Her pet name was "Belle et Bonne", and nobody had more to do with the happiness of the last years of the "patriarch" than she had.

He wrote to Frederick II., that he won't resign for a gloriole and that he should buy him a one, that it wouldn't be that expensive...
That's why I gave him here a one

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-"It is demonstrable," said he, "that things cannot be otherwise than they are; for as all things have been created for some end, they must necessarily be created for the best end. Observe, for instance, the nose is formed for spectacles; therefore we wear spectacles. The legs are visibly designed for stockings; accordingly we wear stockings. Stones were made to be hewn and to construct castles; therefore my lord has a magnificent castle; for the greatest baron in the province ought to be the best lodged. Swine were intended to be eaten; therefore we eat pork all year round. And they who assert that everything is right, do not express themselves correctly; they should say that everything is best."
-"After the earthquake, which had destroyed three-fourths of the city of Lisbon, the sages of that country could think of no means more effectual to preserve the kingdom from utter ruin than to entertain the people with an auto-da-fe, it having been decided by the University of Coimbra, that the burning of a few people alive by a slow fire, and with great ceremony, is an infallible preventive of earthquakes... The same day there was another earthquake, which made most dreadful havoc."
-"If this is the best of all possible worlds, what are the others?"
-"I am the best man in the world, and yet I have already killed three men, and of these three, two were priests."

Voltaire; Candide
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'... his real name is not Morival, Talonde Rather, he is the son of a president in Abbeville ...
Talonde but was, along with the Chevalier de La Barre, the son of a colonel of our armies, at the age of fifteen years imprisonment by the Iroquois from Abbeville to the ordinary and highly embarrassing ordeal for chopping off the hand and cutting the tongue, the slow burning at the stake because he had Capuchin not greeted and hummed a song and the supreme court in Paris upheld that judgment, on that French bishops him no more accusations to be without religion, this master of the Court made their murderers to standing as Christians.
I beg your pardon, the Iroquois that I have compared it with that hideous judges ... '

Voltaire to Frederick II

There are truths which are not for all men, nor for all times.

I'm still suprised sometimes, when people act civilzed. They avoid it so often
Nevertheless, we should avoid political themes, better

that can get ugly. :}

But just a quick question; what do you think of "2045". (just in class you don't know it. It's this thing that people are trying to do, where they try to download they memories and data in their brain to a computer that feeds it to a robotic body and you can then live through eternity that body.)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lisa-im-laerm In reply to Olaf68 [2013-08-10 09:13:11 +0000 UTC]

Don't believe that it is possible. Our memories are not always true anyways, we change it through out our lifes and believe in it! There was a test made, they showed people, pics of their childhood, where they were in a ballon (it was a manipulated pic). Many people could remember that they had a ballon-flight after they saw this pic and they believed, really in it.It was a memory, which never happened, at all.
One more useless try to live for eternity, doesn't will work, in my opinion! But maybe I'm wrong the machine must be creative, too and that's very difficult to make and can even end up in an horror trip, when the fantasy of the machine wants that

You?

I'm in the same boot, as you on that one. Though a lot of big name people in Robotics and the (Fancy, medical name for people that study the brain) are pushing that it'll happen. But to me it like decapitating some one and putting the head on a robotic body and hoping that it'll work. And if you can down load the brain how do you get the data in to 1's and 0's. Β

I don't see why people want to live for eternity, it cheapens life. I mean tomorrow I might be feeding the worms or I might be living it up (except if I work). Be a mock existences too.

lisa-im-laerm In reply to Olaf68 [2013-08-12 15:14:33 +0000 UTC]

We have the same opinion

Also, how to put this so called consciousness into the machine!?! Especially, when the philosophers still arguing about, what conscious really is, if it exists...
Have read a story, lately. The writer remembers a time, as he was young and took, many things tragical and after something remembers him years after that, he only could laugh about it. So if someone, dies as a teenager in "tragical" love, he will see this memory always and forever as tragical, if he dies later, he is more lucky and if he dies very old f. e. because of dementia, he won't remeber nothing at all But interesting, what people always try to do, for eternal life Think it is good that we die, especially for the next generations...

bond to happen one day ;}

The object of matter well need a (soul) like to have either a conscious and/or a subconscious. Because that's the plane or entity that controls the states of being. So to give these, robot/ super computers, beings a conscious then you have to give them a soul.

I've never got why people want eternal life. I mean after so many year you go back to an infant state of being. A saying I know goes "Death is our sweetest reward for living. It's the peace of after hardship." or something like that.Β

Just was kidding, don't forget da Vinci, we are going forward
Think it would become only a kind of book ( which no one reads again ), this robot thing...
Jim Morrison said something similar, when I remember right, that death is a friend, or something like that...
Why you calling yourself Olaf btw? James is such an beautiful name and you're calling yourself Olaf?
