Adric could have been cool. The real tragedy was that they killed him off rather than employ a little character development. He would have been the perfect 'snotty little oik mans up' story for all the Adric haters out there to secretly relate to.Luckily when I was ten I couldn't tell his acting was a bit , um. Yeah, that. But we've forgiven worse on Doctor Who - heck, some people positively adore Ten's Overused Shouty God Mode. XD
I shall shut up now before I am lynched.

Adric is a fun character before Davison and the fading fourth Doctor makes a good mentor. Then the script editor that was looking after Adric left and almost immediately changed again. I can understand the character reacting badly when his mentor regenerates and elder sisters arrive but it's less fun to watch. Plus, an awkward teen boy is the last thing legions of teen boy viewers wanted to be shown. As with many mishandled 80's Dr Who characters, he gets some better treatment in recent Big Finish audios.

This is awesome, personally, I've always loved Adric and before I saw the episodes with him in them I was completely unable to pick a favorite companion ((Nyssa, Turlough, Rose, and Donna being secondaries.)) I've never really got why people don't like him... :/

Hee. We were young and innocent and didn't notice any (or much) of the cringeworthy directing and acting that Peter Davison castigates himself about nowadays.
That's a really beautiful portrait of Adric, capturing the odd beauty of his face, which was sublimated behind his usually (but not always) bratty persona.
I loved Adric when he wasn't driving me crazy. And then Earthshock made sure we all cared about him just as he left.

No lynching here! I had a big soft spot for Adric and I wept when he died. I'd excuse myself by saying I was only 7 at the time, but in all honesty I can't....because I still cry even NOW when watching Earthshock.

Hey, I can see it. In fact, just before he died, Adric seemed really close to a breakthrough in his character development. Tragic that they didn't let it happen. As for forgiving worse in Dr. Who, how about doctor three who was often a bit of a pompous jerk but still lovable in spite of it? I never really liked three all that much, but even he had his endearing moments. Of course, Doctor one was a cranky, sometimes downright cantankerous old man, but he's still remembered fondly. I liked Adric as a companion, but he was still a snob. You can see it in his first appearance on the show, adamantly insisting "But I AM better than you, I'm an elite!"

I'm still trying to figure out whether I like Adric because his insecurity makes him complex and interesting or because he's really pretty and I'm really shallow, but either way, this is a beautiful piece. The color choice is fantastic and I love the highlights on the hair.

I2M (one of the lesser astrodroids that should show up in a Star Wars story one day) impressed.
Just watched Earthshock this weekend. When you know what's going to happen to the lad at the end, it becomes all the more poignant.
In the accompanying making-of doc, Matthew Waterhouse does show up, sporting a much better haircut than the one he had back in the day.

Oh, I didn't know. I knew he was supposed to die, but I didn't know it was in that episode. I wasn'texactly surprised when it happened, but my bff and I nevertheless sat there with our mouths hanging open like ".....what? you mean.... he's dead? for real???" for a good few minutes. And we kept talking about it the next day. We just couldn't wrap our heads around it.
