nights like tonight
make me believe we're
the only people alive,
that everyone else has vanished
and left us beneath this
massive patchwork sky.

we hold close together
in the dark,
survivors of a silent apocalypse.
even though there are
no souls around to hear us,
we speak in whispers
as if stainless steel words
could raise their ghosts from the dust.

but we are not alone.

I am once again reminded
of how small you and I are,
how insignificant.
we are two grains of sand
slowly sinking through
god's hourglass,
invisible and loose,
quietly drifting
in our own gravity.

the universe is uncomprehendingly
large,
but when I am with you
I carry it on a thread
like a balloon,
like something light and insignificant
that could slip away forever
and not change a thing.
