Description Project: create a product label that combines historical art styles into one retro look.

Product: La Planeta shiraz. La Planeta is a new italian wine company, but in the short time they've been making wine they've firmly established a reputation for quality and tradition. I needed an illustration that suggested quality without boring formality. Taking a cue from the product name, I decided to do the sun and moon getting drunk.

A lot of people in my class were picking styles to combine that were already very similar; for some reason art nouveau and art deco was a popular combination. Not that there's anything wrong with that way of thinking... I just wanted to do something more unusual. I picked styles that would complement the look and idea I was going to do, but also would contrast as much as possible with eachother, to make an interesting combination.

I studied classical sketches by Michealangelo and Davinci, and I studied Aubrey Beardsley, particularly his early work. I thought the soft careful modelling of the classical drawings and the flat graphic patterning and stylization of the deco/nouveau designs would be interesting and complementary.

So voila. The faces scanned incredibly dark unfortunately, but besides that and the horribly wonky shoulder on my sun, I'm fairly pleased with the result.

This is watercolors, conte, and ink. The teachers wanted to torture us I guess and made us PAINT IT HUGE: I think the final dimensions were something like 28 by 15. I had to scan it in in TEN BLOODY PIECES and it took me almost three hours to get the damned thing all scanned and ready to print; I think I deserve a cookie just for that.

I love this! *screaming inside!
I've always wanted to design a wine label, I thought it would be good fun! And yours is awesome, probobly my favorite of every one I've seen (thus the favorite!)
and the style is awesome.(I love sciency/classical which I guess = renaissance (in a way!) stuff!) I've completely enamored . ..
I think this may have made my day!

this is beautiful, I'm really glad that you chose two such dissimilar styles because the result is just amazing. I immediately thought of da Vinci and Beardsley when I saw this and I love how they flow from one style smoothly into another. It also feels very appropriate for your description of the company - a combination of tradition and quality but in a new company. This ancient art of wine making based in the new and now. Your use of conte is especially lovely, soft and perfectly modeled.

Gorgeous. I love the mixed styles in it. Even more so, the sun and moon getting drunk. That's just priceless.

That's absolutely lovely! Your marriage of the two styles is flawless, and while I did notice the shoulder, the proportions do not detract from the picture in any way ( after all, michelangelo's figures are very voluptuous and gargantuan almost to the point of disproportianallity). In fact, I thought it was an intentional exaggeration until I saw your description!

I think I want to try this for myself sometime soon. I just hope I can execute the concept half as well as you did!

P.S. Any reason you used stars of david? Just wondering.

holy crap !, i can only imagine what this must look like full-size

the more I look the more authentic/professional it looks, even as a combination of styles. & I love that the faces scanned in darker, the contrast between them and the hands/glasses/garments is extremely pleasant

your variety never fails to impress me. !
