Description I always feel happy when I complete a piece and feel that I have somehow made progress. For instance, perhaps six months ago I do not think I could have consistently drawn 5 (4?) faces in the same sketch. Better yet, I think that while there is something lacking in my clothing ability, that at least 3 of the faces came out in such a way that I think Senpai (Ashiyarts) would be proud if she could see the inspiration I've taken from her style, and how I've drastically improved over the course of 16 or so practice runs.

The biggest lesson I learned with this one was that I could, in fact, come out with decent faces by keeping things simple. One yellow wash at the beginning, red pigmentation in the right areas, and  blue shadows was all I needed to get white girls on the page. And that perhaps I was trying to over complicate hair, and that this much more simpler way of coloring it is actually much softer and more desirable than how I'd been previously trying to hack at it.

Perhaps now I just need to learn compelling backgrounds and how to make my water color people pop from the page.

I guess on a plus side, I finally learned how to work my calligraphy pens. The blobby dots were only semi-intentional. Apparently when trying to flick random highlights onto the page, one should be careful that the pen is not over-saturated with white ink.

I am most pleased with my Ami and Rei. I especially liked how I managed to make Rei turn out slightly more glammed in an elegant way, and Ami slightly dressed down from the rest. I especially like how Rei's lips turned out, Minako's hair, and the opulent lighting I managed to get with Usagi's hair, even if the scanner did not quite pick up the colors as I'd have liked.

So I guess my goals going forward is finding a meanignful way to incorporate the white ink other than just applying it everywhere that I can because I finally got it to come off the pen. And perhaps trying to keep from relying on map pencil usage to finish the painting, and instead on better contouring technique.

Hello there! Wow, I really love the technique you applied here. It's a very interesting composition! I read your little description at the bottom and I just found it awesome that you learned a lot while creating this and I think you did an excellent job of finding a style similar to Ashiyarts (I follow the person too on Youtube so I'd know hehe.) But anyway, moving on:

Colour :
I'm a sucker for pastel shades, well personally at least, so I really love how you managed to use the pastel colors without it fading into the background or being too lost in the coloring. I also love how the coloring isn't flat and an array of colors can be seen mixed into their hair and clothing.

Hm... something I would suggest would probably be to play around with contrasts and colors to make them pop out more. I'm not an expert at watercolor but I have worked with it before. I can see though that that was what you tried doing on the skin and I think you should just keep working on that and contrasts will come naturally!

Concept :
The pose and expression make the piece look really interesting and I love the contrast of personality I see here. It creates an interesting radial balance.

I was just wondering if it was intentional for the others to get cut out of the picture? It just makes it look a bit too cropped but it's not too big of an issue for me.

Construction :
Your technique is really good! I love how you shaded the hair and the skin most especially. With just using the basic colors, you were able to make the skin pop up and the hair look soft, especially with the girl with silver hair. I keep looking at her because out of all of them I really love how she was done ahu

Some few small notes would probably be with, first of all, Usagi's hair. It seems too transparent that apart from the bold outline, I probably wouldn't be able to see her hair color underneath. The background is also a small issue, but not too distracting. It would just be better maybe if it was also done with watercolour to show the sky or whatever object is in their setting.

All in all though, I guess what I just mentioned was nitpicking haha but I really really do love this piece! Keep up the amazing work I can't wait to see what you'll make in the future and keep improving. (I also understand the struggle of drawing a lot of people together so I really admire how you managed to do it so well.)

Thank you so much for the constructive comments! I agree with all of the points. Ashiyaarts makes contrast look so effortless and I wonder in part of it is because she isn't afraid of going with a bold amount of pigment because she is confident enough in what she can achieve with her paints--or if it is the quality of paint itself that lends her an easier time with that!

The picture does look terribly cropped, doesn't it? It's because that was the full width of my paper, and alas by the time drawn three of them I already realized I would have to redraw Ami (which I did not mind because Ami came out looking better than the first) to even get four of the girls, let alone 5. There was a peculiar gap between Minako and Usagi too, so instead of fretting about it I threw in Chibi-usa's hair and giggled to myself about the idea of chibi-usa being too short.  But yeah, that was 90% laziness and 10% I wasn't entirely certain that I would be able to have enough space on their faces to practice shading with comfortable space for my good quality thick round.

The sky part was also laziness. I was over with my map pencils on a different table than where I watercolor and I realized that there was a lot of empty space, and since I was trying to balance saturation and shadows, I decided to just be like, "Bleh, I'll just fill this in!" but I think in part that's part of what makes the picture lack contrast, because the hard line of a lot of water and color provided great contrast between their heads, and where I penciled in the area... not so much!

  Thank you again!

Aw no problem! Glad I was able to help haha and don't worry, I totally get you. I have those lazy artist moments too that get mentioned in about 60% of my artworks HAHAHAHA

You're very much welcome haha and as said, keep up the amazing work!

Things I really like: The white ink you mentioned in your bio looks great, they make the people stand out much more and they add a bit more variety and definition to the artwork. Your blending game is also on point. Most notably on the hair of the blue girl. The well blended blotches of red add a bit of character onto the girls and really help them emote. One more thing I will mention is the characters are very well drawn and have a defined style, which normally bothers me when it comes to manga-style drawings, as they look very similar, however I think this artwork evades this pitfall, and you clearly have a defined style.

Things to perhaps improve on: this image could have been cropped. The bomb at the bottom hasn’t reached the same quality your painting of the girls has set. The white clothes on the blue-haired girl confuse the painting a little. Cropping the image would also aid the artwork as the centre of the girls heads is where our attention is drawn, which is slightly up and to the right of the centre. if cropped, it could be centred.

However, as you mentioned in the description, you pulled off more than one figure very successfully, so this is kind of a nitpick. I look forward to the next artwork.

Thank you!!

YeaaaH ai should have cropped. Or drew things small enough as to have them all visible. My draftmenship could definitely use some training

It is kind of you to compliment my blending! But I am afraid that I must have tricked you. My blending and water control are weak and this is kind of an excepton piece.

Again, thank you for your advice!

This looks so warm and cozy! I love this style of colouring and shading
what tools did you use to colour? my best guess is watercolours

♡♡♡!

You guessed it! Watercolors. The exact tools are as follows:

Paper: Cheap mixed media paper from the kid's section at Michael's

Paints: Windsor and Newton travel sized palette (8 colors)

Brushes: 1 nice artist grade round from Michael's and then cheap 7 dollar pack of mixed media brushes

Other: Mechanical bic pencil from a grocery store, a calligraphy dip pen and acrylic ink, and crayola map pencils.

wowww that's awesome
i've been trying to get into watercolours and such, but i haven't been getting great results so far
do you have any tips?

littledeadybear In reply to kickerkitten [2018-06-21 19:59:13 +0000 UTC]

if you have any works on DA i will scroll through them when im off work!

for me, what works is watching youtube speed paints and demos. tutorials are obviously going to be more useful but by seeing peole so effortlessly and fluidly create in a sped up hour or so gives me motivation to keep it simple but go for it anyways.

my biggest tip is just to try everyday. not every painting has to be a finished masterpiece. make a loose portrair sketch, slap paints on it, be done in 30 mins, and if it didnt turn out well, then oh well, it was only a 30 min investment, and the more you do this the more you will find comfort with your colors and you will find a work flow and improvement after a week.

second tip is invest in a quality round brush. the difference between a cheap shitty brush and a good one is night and day, am
nd you only need one round for any type of casual paint.

These are the only things I've posted on dA so far:
though the second one isn't traditional watercolour, it's these watercolour-esque markers that I have
also the first one is watercolour pencils i think, not traditional watercolour either

Also, thanks so much for your advice! I'll be sure to keep at it and try to get better

Very nice! The pink one is very adorable.

I had water color pecils too at one point and tbh i have way more ease with my water color paints. They are more intuitive and magic happens. I threw everything away from my water color pencils because it was so bad...

Thanks!

I think I might try that too once I get a little bit more into traditional art, since I'm mainly digital right now.
Would you suggest investing in watercolour paints or is it really just the round brush that needs to be good quality?

littledeadybear In reply to kickerkitten [2018-06-22 19:32:14 +0000 UTC]

Keeping in mind that I'm a complete novice painter and a decent sketcher, the pieces I have painted thus far are done with hobbyist quality paint that cost around $36 for 8 colors.

I just bought a more quality brand ($76 for 6 5 ml tubes of the daniel paint brand) and on my next day off I am going to try them out, so I can keep you posted on if I see a significant increase of quality in the end product, or if they are easier to use.

I would not have thouggt a brush makes a difference, btw, until.I experienced the difference myself. However the good quality brush is night and day easier to control the water flow with. Maybe paints will be the same?

I would suggest only a small investment at first to test the medium out. Get a basic essential set that marks somewhere between 25 and 35 and give it an honest trial before you decide to drop or go forward. I think you may like it, because I find water colors a lot like digital painting with transparency layering

Yeah, let me know how you find the more expensive set.

I think that's the plan of action right now. I really love watercolours, because the paintings and portraits I've seen people make with them are honestly just so nice to look at, but it's also a matter of time I guess.

Thanks for all the help, and keep me posted!

Hey, I really like the blobby dots! What a happy little accident. The white ink looks great, overall. White highlights (especially glowing noses) are my weakness! So I really like this picture. Smiles are often challenging to draw but you did well. The blonde one's is a bit plasticky but the composition is so good that it makes up for it.

littledeadybear In reply to Seeeks [2018-06-21 05:52:36 +0000 UTC]

NOT TO MENTION that the blonde ones especially came out looking hammered as hell since I made the red pigment on their noses too strong!! Thank you so much for your comments, just trying to make each of their 5 (4 technically since one got cut off) mouths look right took up over half of the sketching time!

Smile your pain away, Usagi. Smile it away.
