She stood there numbly as the shards slipped through her fingers and scattered in the wind like powder, the tiny fragments glittering in brilliant shades of white, blue and pink.She didn't feel anything.
She couldn't.
They had been there with her, talking, walking, commanding, fighting, only mere hours ago.
Now only one of her kind remained.
She was all alone.
She was the last Diamond.
Distant voices yelled They're retreating!, but she did not understand. The words passed right through her mind as if they were in some forgotten alien language.
There was a strange ringing in her head, drowning out everything, taking up any space for thought...
She stared into the distance with empty eyes.

They tried everything. Yellow Diamond simply stood idle, staring into the distance no matter what they did. They now had no authority. They had to make a new one, but with the sacrifice of a planet. With the sacrifice of Eris and Dysnomia, the Great Diamond Authority was reborn. Eight diamonds meant many new courts, but the new authority was stronger than its predecessor of the same name. Green Diamond was suspicious of the original Great Diamond Authority, as she secretly owns the last symbol. Neither the new diamonds nor gems talk about what happened to the diamonds from the old authority, or earth. Though, for the new diamonds, questions still linger as to who the old diamonds were and what they did.

From what we've seen of YD, I don't think a united Gem empire would last very long with just YD in charge. After a few centuries there would be multiple rebellions like Rose's and perhaps later some higher-ranking gems on othe planets would start seceding and form rump states.

A good comparison of the Gem empire would be the post third century Roman empire. With WD being the "senior" Emperess and the other Diamonds being "junior" co-Emperesses.

For all the Diamonds faults, they've obviously done a good job of maintaining a stable government for many millennia. Or at least until recently, anyway.

As cruel and tyrannical as they may be, I don't think they have ambitions or greed for power quite like humans do, probably since they were sort of 'built' for their roles and those roles only.
Which would explain why their system lasted so long, but raises another question; Who created them?!

I have a feeling that we'll learn more about the Gem civilization in depth and more when WD herself is revealed. That's the most likely reason why she hasn't even been mentioned, let alone seen, yet.
