Description Something about The Owl House I think is kind of overlooked is how terrifying The Boiling Isles are for the characters in the show. We as an audience see it pretty PG because it's beautifully animated, but being there is a whole other story, and with this illustration I wanted to make that feeling a little bit closer to the watcher.
For this illustration I made a bit of reasearch, which ended up being really fun, so I'm gonna go ahead and describe the process now (stop reading if you don't care about that)
First, I compared which kind of owl resembles the most to the Owl Beast, so I went for the Great Horned Owl. Something important for the design are the black eyes, but the owl's eyes are pretty iconic, so I kind of mixed them. One of the great horned owl's biggest advantages is its feathers, making them really stealthy (allthough with this size the owl beast isn't quite stealthy), but also its taloons. I didn't make them very sharp in the drawing, because you shouldn't worry about it scratching or stabing you, but its grip. For the great horned owl, once it grabs you you need a force of about 13 kg (30 lbs) to break free, and that's with the 55 cm (22 in) owl, once the huge Owl Beast gets you, it's a one way ticket for her sharp fangs. In the visuals, the owl's taloons don't really have feathers, but some kind of fur, so that's what I made for the front legs.
Anyway, hope you liked it, and happy spooktober!
