Description Western Terrestrial Garter Snake, Thamnophis elegans. The title stems from the species name of this snake. Don't ask me why this snake was deemed elegant, I personally think that they're rather unattractive, always being brown and what not, and they have bad manners, musking you with foul-smelling liquid when you pick them up. All that doesn't stop me from liking this picture though.

Just a beautiful photo. Even though they have bad manners, like you say, I admit to having an affection for them.

I think it looks pretty elegant I wonder if it doesn't mean something else though, because the red eared slider is Trachemys scripta elegans and I think there are several other species with elegans in their names... I mean, do you find this elegant? [link]

I got the definition from a book of scientific names, but you aroused my curiosity, so I looked up "elegant" at m-w.com to see what its etymology was. and the results:
Etymology:
Middle French or Latin; Middle French, from Latin elegant-, elegans; akin to Latin eligere to select

so there you have it.

As to the worm... microbiologists and parasitologists are a weird bunch, I wouldn't be surprised if they found it elegant.

hahaha! Maybe there's a connotation of "elegant" with "simple" or "basic" since garter snakes and red eared sliders are pretty common species...
