Description Animation of these base-characters:

Animation done with AfterEffects, it's only uploaded as a FLASH SWF because that's the only format that ends up small enough to be uploaded to DA, it's a jpg sequence.

Another run, guess I should do a walking or jumping one sooner or later

Can I offer a tip? INCLUDE A PRELOADER!!! xD
That simple animation was extremely heavy (4mb), and people with medium or slow internet conections take forever to load, and show a lagged animation while it loads...Try adding a preloader to show a loading percent, scince Im betting some people actually get sick of waiting and dont know how much more to wait, and leave the page angry. THere are already premade deviantart preloaders at download section, or newgrounds, but if u feeling uncofortable, make ur own with simple "flash preloader tutorials".

Just a tip of course...but overall, give u a great thumbs up on that animation, looking like a pro RIght now dont have much work, so if u need help with preloader, let me know and I can even make it for u, just gime details on what u want it to look like, coding is simple and not much work. Anyways...wow...long review, betcha getting sick of reading xD, Guess Ill shut up talking and let u be haha...let me know if u wanna take my offer, anyways, awesome animation (again) xD

that do sounds useful and also understandable (and that people get annoyed by loading this huge animation )
Problem is I don't create any of my animations in flash, I just create an image-sequence in AfterEffects that is saved as SWF, I can't really add anything code-wise or similar stuff to the animation, I was also thinking of getting a video account enabled on DA so I can upload those as AVIs, which would have a shorter and better loading time

Thanks a lot!

Oh right...lol, guess my mistake, tought u did or import this on flash . But still no problem, Im not sure if u got flash, but its quite simple to import, add preloader, and then just export as a simple loading animation with content. If you dont have flash, Id be happy to do a preloader for you, if u gave me a small sketch of what u want it to look like, or a description, scince before in other accounts, I used to make preloaders for people in newgrounds and deviantart comunity, tough if u want to make it by yourself, its ok

I kinda did but I have actually no idea how to use flash (or any of it's components)
I am not sure if a swf. (or a fla. file) would give the possibility to add a preloader in flash later on
(so the possibility would be that it could be done for me )
I'd really love to get a preloader, but I do understand if that is too much work for you
I don't know if that is possible, but I have an artist-stamp logo which would look nice to simply place it on a black
background in grey or whatever faded color and fill it up from the bottom with another color, just like a bar until everything is loaded
just an example though

Did you get a run-cycle reference for this?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lizkay In reply to Rafael-Domination [2010-04-25 06:46:10 +0000 UTC]

not really
That's why it looks off on a few areas..

Rafael-Domination In reply to Lizkay [2010-04-25 08:44:44 +0000 UTC]

Props, then!

I mean, I agree that it's off in a few areas, like one of the hind legs. But then again, where does one film a real-life gryphon for reference? For a made-up run cycle, this is a very, very good one!

Thanks!
The back part with the rider bothers me the most, besides the leg stuff, but this file is yet so messed up XD I just hoped it would end up acceptable

A nice piece of work!

I like the style put into it and the bright shading does wonders.

An all around excellent animation. =3

You may benefit from looking at some run cycles of real animals. The spine of mammals bends and stretches during a run. I realize this isn't a mammal (afaik), but the principle is the same. There is no spinal movement on this and it makes the front end look extremely gimpy and abnormal.

Animation is very smooth to my inexperienced eyes, and it really looks like there's a skeleton under that skin!
GO Carmen, GO!
Beautiful job Lizkay!

Is animating pictures like that generally very hard work?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lizkay In reply to AesirChronicler [2010-01-16 09:17:24 +0000 UTC]

Thankie!
This was a little challenge to animate, mainly because I couldn't move her body/back part as I wanted due to the saddle, so it looks a bit stiff at that area
Otherwise it takes quite some time to set the right key points, and cut the image into pieces

I agree with13blackdragons about the headbobbing. It looks odd. I think it has more to do with the fact that the head is synced up with the movement of the front legs, when it sould be contrary to the front legs. On a run the head should be focued on one place or driving the run, leading with the nose. Right now it looks like the chest and neck are leading the run, with the head being thrown up with the feet when the nose errr, beak should lead the movement then the feet drive up. It seems like you were trying to get a more hyena like run as opposed to dog or cat run with this so I found this: [link] Check out what the head does vs what the front legs do.

Also the image is somewhat blurry. Can't tell weather thats from a need to up the resolution or too much motion blur.

Other than that, it looks awesome. ^^ You're getting really good at those. Have you thought of trying other 2d animation software? To my understaning AE is not particularly good for animation, its more post production. Maybe flash?

(Oh yeah, and I found this awesome walk cycle reference when looking up Hyenas. I'm thrilled and thought I'd share: [link] )

Lizkay In reply to Falconsong [2009-12-28 09:39:57 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
The problem I have with this creature is on one side, the anatomy, it's supposed to have a very high placed neck/hunchback the head isn't supposed to make a one-line look resp. movement with the spine, there is supposed to be a kind of kink (like a Rhinoceros for example) I wanted to create a look like as if she is 'throwing' herself forward using the weight of her chest/neck and head area ( I couldn't find something better than this to show what I mean: [link] ) it's also not really a run, it's more a sequence of jumps
second problem is the rider/saddle, I had the back moving a lot more at the beginning when I animated her seperate (the gryphon is the female there ) after putting the rider and the saddle on I had to reduce that cause it just didn't look good.
The thing behind those animations is, it's not a frame-by-frame thing, it's a so called 'limited animation' you prepare a base image and animate parts of it, a bit like a 3D model, the blurry-ness comes as soon as a movement is out of focus, I need to animate the whole scene in double or triple size of the final size to get rid of that but my computer doesn't even manage this size right for a RAM preview I dare to say this is actually the limit, not sure if I can do any better at this point...
I have no idea to work with flash as it's working with a completely different technique than I used and learned for these scenes I do now.
Anyway, Thanks a lot for the tips, I am still more in the area of 'trying' than doing though
