Description For all the haters online who claim that Chaktoay was a "flat" character with "no personality," I always have a MUCH easier time finding traits from his personality and backstory to work into a picture like this, than I do with bland Captain-Generic-Hero-Janeway.

Chakotay would tell you to interpret the symbols, but if you don't feel like it, I'll just tell you:

- Rock: He loved paleontology as a kid ("One Small Step")

- Boxing Gloves: The Tattooed Terror has been punching people since Season 1, when he punched his own crewman for mouthing off at him, and in Season 5 they finally just made an episode for Chakotay to just punch people the entire time.

- Maquis Symbol: Unlike Kirk and Riker, Chakotay's macho toughness actually has a backstory

- Val Jean: His Maquis raider

- Prayer rock: It's a rock, and...you pray with it. I think.

- Medicine Wheel: For some reason, Chakotay's medicine wheel looks nothing like an actual Indian medicine wheel. (Google it, or search for medicine wheel art on DA to see the real thing.)

- Bird wing: Part of his medicine bundle

- Spear: He "hunted" with it in "Waking Moments," in the most Freudian scene in "Star Trek" history

- Earth's moon: His alarm to let himself know when he's dreaming

- Command pip: Because I couldn't think of anything else to fill the bubble.

Great job on making the dream catcher, through I don't think he was a true native American he seem his tribe was a mixed of different cultures.

Agreed.

Quite a few fan-fics are dedicated to trying to make sense out of Chakotay's wonky "heritage." There's one writer, Teya, who is actually Native American, so her version of Chakotay's background sounds the most believable because she actually knows what the hell she's talking about.

My own personal theory is this: Chakotay's *mother* was a "real" Indian, but one of mixed heritage. His "father" was from a recently-formed tribe that was trying to re-create a lost culture. I base this theory on the fact that when Chakotay talks about his *father's* tribe, that's when most of the Hollywood Indian bullshit crops up. But he never mentions his father's tribe as having any connection to the dream catcher in his quarters, or the Native-styled designs on his furniture.

I kinda wanted him to become captain.

Same. As much as I love Janeway.

In any case I wish Chakotay had been more Maquis throughout the series, not so loyal to Starfleet. (Not that he always was, he rebelled plenty, but he could have rebelled more.) The fault in that lies not with "Voyager's" writers, as many haters claim, but with the overall premise of "Star Trek." Starfleet must always be the "good guys," main characters must always be uber-loyal to Starfleet and the ship's captain, etc. Blech.

Agree the series had promised but it seems that some writers and few actors didn't pull their weight. Or they seem that the some actors didn't truly feel the part they play.

Chakotay sounds awfully a lot like Char Kuey Teow.

I've never heard of that, so I looked it up, and now I am laughing.

But maybe it makes sense, because both Chakotay and Char Kuey Teow are probably delicious.

Freudian... LOL, I hadn't realised that until you pointed it out! :$

I love the dreamcatcher like feathers at the frame and the pastiche medicine wheel actually looks good here. Is the long section of gold behind the portrait the bar of provisional Maquis field officers?

Really well done! I have one question though, how is Riker badass? Right now that's stumping me, even though I like him... Lol.

Yeah. He dreams he's walking through the cavernous corridors of Voyager, with a huge spear, trying to stab a delicate feminine doe. I'd say that's pretty Freudian. What makes it so hysterical to me is that Chakotay is an expert on symbols, so when he looks at his spear at the beginning of the dream, he knows exactly what's going on.

Anyway, thanks so much! This was a fun one to do. Commander Symbols was great to make a stained glass window for.

Riker is badass the way Kirk is. He punches bad guys, he's buff, he takes no crap from people, he intimidates Barclay. As a younger man he once stood up against a mutiny on a starship. Of course, Chakotay's the type of guy who would've been *leading* the mutiny, so he's still got Riker beat.

He intimidates Barclay, what an example, lol. But yeah, Riker is great, I just haven't watched TNG for a while and forget some of his good moments.

Lol good point.

I haven't watched much of TNG either. I really need to watch some classic episodes of TNG and DS9 that I've never seen, but keep hearing about.
